I finally am able to post pics again. I recently built this swing out tire carrier for my CJ7. I used a latch and hinge from http://www.bigrocksoffroad.com/hard_parts.htm

It is designed to carry a 33" tire and my hi-lift jack. The hinge and latch from these guys made the rest of the design fairly straightforward.

Looks great Greg, thanks for the link! I passed it to a buddy who is working on an EB and planning his spare carrier.
I like the placement of your auxilliary light too.

Welcome back Greg, don't be a stranger! :)

Thanks all. I am real happy with it. I was not sure that the clamp/latch was practical enouh to outwiegh its ugliness, bt it has worked out great. No squeaks or rattles and it is adjustable and has never opened unintentionally.

An update, my tire carrier fell off.The shaft that the carrier pivots on broke and the entire thing dumped onto the road. Luckily this was at about 20 mph and there was no other traffic.
My speculation is that it sheared due to vibration. I did not put any kind of spacer between the upper part of the carrier assembly and the tailgate and had noticed that it seemed to move quite a bit. The new and improved version will be using a double shear hinge!

I've read about a number on hinge failures now and surprisingly only one happened at freeway speeds, but thankfully none involved other people/cars.

Double shear is the way to go it seems, some people also seem to believe in a soft mount to the body also to eliminate vibrations (main cause of failure). An example is the Safari Guard system
