Does anyone run a mini spool in their Rear axle on the street??? I'm guessing that you can but it will tear tires up fast.

Any and all opinions are welcome?? They seem pretty inexpensive on Ebay, plus it says that you don't need to reset ring and pinion backlash and such.

    Thanks guys

Full size truck you would be Ok but something short like a jeep you could get in troble fast. I had a spool in my 1 ton chevy and it was a pain exspecially on bad road conditions.

    Spools are for race cars.
Some guys try to run them on the street in Jeeps and tell everyone that they love them. Yea right.
Leave the spools alone and buy a tight limited slip or a locker. ;)

Why not get an Aussie Locker? They're only like 270 per axle and there is no pinion set up involved and will be almost as strong as a mini spool as they both are just replacements for the spider gears. They still might not be as well behaved as a LSD or selectable locker but they're cheap.

    Yeah,
I have thought about the Aussie or even a Quick loc. The spool that I saw was only like 60 bucks. Now that is cheap :D 270 per axle is around mid range if you ask me.

Another question, being as I live in Iowa, and we do, on occasion get snow in the winter, along with ice, how will a lunch box type locker in the front perform??

These at this point are all hypotheticals. The wife won't even let me put a new suspension under High5, but X mas is coming!!!!!

    Thanks guys

I am gonna state the obvious here, it won't affect the front at all unless you lock the hubs. I am sure you meant with the hubs locked though. Umm I dunno I have never tried to drive on the street with the front locked in, I imagine it would not be very friendly. As for the back, well yeah even the lock rite (aussie etc...) will get very weird in the snow, I guess if you are careful thoguh it will be ok..

FWIW, I had my CJ5 setup with front and rear PowrLoks and have played with it in the snow here in W. MI, on a couple winter trail runs and a small amount of plowing.

There's a lot of "it depends" here...;)

In *deep* snow - 12-14" going down a two track trail in 4WD, the limited slips performed well. Lots of fun, actually - amazing what the Jeep would go through.

On ice / snow covered plowed roads, in 2WD with just the rear PowrLok, the Jeep was a nightmare. Any little bit of wheelspin and the rear end would come around immediately. Launching from a stop was a real "feather the gas" kind of thing.

In 4WD, while plowing snow - so a mix of maybe 6-8" or just snow covered/slippery roads, spinning all 4 wheels on ice the Jeep would "crab" off to the passenger side, you really couldnt steer under those circumstances.

The upshot - the Jeep was OK if the roads were mostly clear, where in 2WD you didn't encounter much ice/ect. And it was OK if there was a healthy amount of snow to be going through in 4WD. It's all the "middle" ground where the conditions would vary from clear roads to snow covered/icy to deep snow that the Jeep kinda scared me - I wouldn't use a Jeep with anything but open diffs or selectable lockers for a daily driver under those conditions.

RIght now it is my dd and I plan to keep it that way for a while. Maybe until I find that perfect J10 :D I think I will just keep them open until this is mainly a trail rig and summer ride.

Thanks for the advice, I have had a LSD in my 99 ranger I had and I really liked it. I also had one in my 96 Mustang GT. At some point I will be putting one in the Jeep.

What does everyone run here as far as lockers or LSD????

I have a "Miller Locked" differential in the back of my TJ, so I can speak from experience-

Don't do it! I welded mine for a "make do", and probably have over 10k mi on it now, at all speeds and all conditions. While it is actually more predictable than when I ran a rear locker, it is absolute Murder on axles. Also, it kills your turning radius on the trail. (The funny thing is, all I have to do is pull the center section and swap a new one in, but I always find something else to do whenever I think about it- I''m actually kinda scared to see how much twist there is on the axles)
