Another question for all you Jeepers. How the heck do you stop fuel from leaking out of the underseat tank. Have a new cap and the tank end looks fine. No rust or divets on the neck. I keep that tank half empty just for that reason. And yes I know they have a vent built in to the cap. Thanks for your insight. Jim out.

Leakage is from the cap /fuel inlet not the tank sorry if I came across that way.

I think some people have added an additional thicker rubber gasket to the cap to reduce leakage, but I have not tried it yet myself.

im interested as well, never really been able to seal mine by the way of just keeping the fuel in, is there a way to buy a sealed cap and then vent it at the tank somehow? or is there a better vented cap that keeps the fuel in?

Confused, is the cap leaking when parked on level ground and a half full tank?

Beeser, im thinking he keeps it only half full beacuse of it leaking, at least that is what I used to do, on any corner i would loose a little bit of fuel unless it was twards the bottom of the tank then I did not loose it, I could be wrong??? that is how I took it..

69utjeeper you are correct. I don't think it would be wise to vent the tank anywhere else as the cap is on the exterior of the vehicle so the fumes wouldn't get to ya.

yea, I guess that is why I just use my rear tank and keep a gallon or so in the front for the "in case" and the ever so trusting fuel gauges.... could you vent it through the fuel return line? that comess from the fuel pump, just put a tee in and make sure the hose is higher than the tank and put the tee in the engine compartment to reduce the fuel smell? just thinking out loud, or would the return line just push the fuel out the end of the line and not go back to the tank???

I spoke to a guy once who welded a dfferent end on the filler neck then used a sealing cap. He vented the tank with a piece of tube up the roll bar. I suppose you could use a one way valve so that if you ever rolled it over it would prevent fuel from spilling out. I don't know that I would worry too much about fuel vapors cause my jeep is so drafty as it is and smells like gear oil anyway. Love that jeep smell!

My cap has a 'dimple' on it. As long as it is on the top, I haven't had fuel leakage problems. When it is on the bottom, it leaks. I can't explain it....

could the dimple be your vent in the cap.And by turning it up its that much harder for the fuel to reach?

Sounds plausible to me. Maybe someone could construct a cap with a one way valve in it then make a fortune off us early jeep guys.

Hello All. Just checked out the gasket on my cap and its made of cardboard or a similar material. Its also stamped motorcraft (Ford) Will try and think of some way of replacing it with rubber or a similar material.

60CJ6: Only solution is to sell the Jeep and get a "real" vehical. R)

I have the origonal locking gas cap (sold one to Schardin also) and it vents thru the lock--it keeps the tumblers clean R) R) .

Right hand turns with a half tank or more, and I "wash" the tumblers!!! ;)
