It might be cheaper to buy a hard case for the rifle and just throw it in the back ;)

A friend of mine back in my Air Force days had a regular truck gun rack attached to some flat iron that he had bolted to the back of his roll bar. It was really a clean looking installation and with his fishing rod and rifle hanging on it, his jeep truly looked like an adventurer's jeep! With that said, I also remember seeing some of the military mounts just below the windshield and thought those looked nice. Only other config I've ever seen is a hard-sided rifle case attached to the outside driver's side front fender so that the driver could reach while in the seat and pull the rifle out. This was in some sporting mag so I don't know how pratical that was.

I used to have a "Universal Jeep Gun Rack" from **** Cepek mounted on my CJ3A. Kind of like a police shotgun rack - upright against the dash, with the gun butt down on the floor. It made it hard to get in and out of the Jeep though, and since I still had the original box, I sold it on eBay. Now I have a military M14/M16 rack (used on the Gama Goat and HMMWV) on my back wheelwell and roll bar. Have to run with the top down to quickly access the gun, but I run that way while hunting anyway. I thought a saddle-type soft rifle scabbard on the roll bar might also work OK.

Hey, that was interesting - maybe I should have said: "Richard" Cepek!

I have tried many of the "universal" jeep gun mounts and found them very hard on nice stocks and scoped rifles.
I purchaced a rack from Cabela's made by rugged gear that has worked fine.
The rack mounts between the seats holds 2 scoped rifles tightly and at the end of the season comes out with 6 thumb screws leaving only a flat plate behind.

I have one of the "Rugged Gear" racks that holds 2 rifles, bolts to the floor in Percival. No complaints, but it wasn't cheap - about $90 shipped IIRC. Much better than any of the plastic covered metal racks that I've seen though.

I picked these up at Walmart around $10. Bolted them direct to the dash using the existing bolts Works well with all my scoped rifles.
