I am trying to fine tune my HEI Distributor I installed months ago. I haven't had the vacuum advance hooked up because I needed to install the adjustable vac. advance according to the article by Rich Motts ( think I found it here through a link in the tech section). Without the vacuum line hooked up, I took initial timing and cruising rpm (3000)timing of 9* and 24* respectively. The article then says to hook up the vacuum line to the vacuum advance. By using "ported vacuum" and not manifold vacuum, the initial timing shouldn't change. My timing with the vacuum hooked up jumped to 29* at idle. I am using the vacuum port on the right front of the rockchester 2 bbl. shown in the picture.[IMG]

Sorry for the small picture. What I tried to show was the only vacuum port on my carb besides the large one at the base for the pcv hose. I notice the carb off my '69 225 has four vacuum ports. I would think the '70 would have the same or more for smog. Has anyone who has done the HEI distributor upgrade even bothered with the adjustable vac. advance or trying to dial in the advance as stated in the article? Here is a link to the article I'm going by http://www.jeepster.org/swchapter/hei-2.html . The stuff I'm referring to starts on page 5.

I've read quite a bit on this subject but have been unable to find the elusive "ported vacuum" hookup. I finally just gave up and run without the vacuum hose hooked to the HEI. It works well so now I just try to forget about it.
