Hi guys, new to this forum, got a question. I have the 225 dauntless v6 in my '69 CJ5 and have discovered something weird. I can move the fan back and forth, like you were trying to turn the engine, and it has about 1" of free play. It is a fixed type fan but heres the weird part, the bottom pulley & balancer move. It stops like it is hitting metal, both ways, like its supposed to do that and theres some kind of stops in there. I was driving the jeep and had not noticed any strange vibrations or noises. Is this some kind of auto cyntrifical balancer or is something wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanx- John

sounds like a bad harmonic balancer
the rubber/insulation is/has seperated from the center hub
do it again and watch the crankshaft bolt that holds the damper on
it's probably not moving, just the outer part is

I'll try that tomorrow. I have the radiator out right now so it should be easy to see.

    Thanx- John

the balancer key might be sheared off as well.

yes that's also possible, along with the bolt being loose
hope the key and keyway are okay
replacing the crank is no fun
