Smart Jeep interior storage ideas?

Hello All. How about sharing your ideas for interior tool/parts storage. I have the passenger underseat compartment but thats about it. Can't use a centre console as that is where my emergency brake lever and OD shifter is. I also saw on someone's cj6 picture that they had a piece of screen welded to the front of the frame just in front of the rad.Looks like a good use of space eh.

 

Right now I have an igloo cooler (complete with camo paint) for a center console, it works pretty good for now but I have both an under seat tank and a custom 20 gallon tank under the body in the rear like the newer CJ5's and thats where the valve control is. I have plans on bolting surplus grenade style ammo cans to the top of the rear fenders in the rear they fit in between the roll bar I have perfectly. They are water tight and can be made lockable with a bit of fabrication. Ammo cans make great mount anywhere storage. I'm currently looking for something that will fit in the hood vent area on the passenger side (The Willys may be an MB) that was JB welded shut. There are tons of different sizes and shapes available (between coolers and ammo cans) I'm sure that you could find the exact size/shape your looking for. Try dirtcheap.com for the ammo cans they also have the NATO fuel cans that don't leak.

 

depending on your fab skills: MB/GPW style storage compartments can be made in the rear fender area, or do what i did and get a toolbox from the flea market and bolt it in the back.

 

Jeep found room for a fuel tank under the rear floor - I'd expect you could put some storage there.

You could probably find some places under the hood too, especially for hard, weather resistant items like tire changing tools.

 

Hmmm... so these early CJs CAN have the tank put under the rear body? I've been wondering about that modification for 2 reasons: 1) to hopefully eliminate the fuel smell in the jeep, and 2) to free up some room under the driver's seat to possibly make room for a bucket seat with a little leg room.

If you did this or had this done since you've had the jeep, I'd like some details.

I have my tank in the rear. It is an aftermarket tank purchased from Trail Quest, kinda expensive, but it is heavy duty. I still need to fabricate a proper filler neck, but I think one could use a neck from a later CJ as long as the filler neck on the tank is the proper size. Check out Boyink's link.
