heres one for you guys. what is the more common tooth count on the dana 18. 26 teeth or 29 teeth? i have an old family friend who has restored his flattie, and now he wants an o.d. for it. i tell him no problem, ill find ya one. well i find two............... and this is where my education on o.d.'s begin. one is in a box, the other is on a jeep. it sounds like the one in the box is a 29 tooth, the one on the jeep we arnt sure, and i dont know what the family friend has either.

so i ask this question to better ball park what the family friend will have. i am going to look at the o.d.'s tommorow. thanks guys

Since swapping stuff out is so easy and common, pulling the cover off and counting teeth is the only sure way.

I have 5 working D18 Tcases in the shop - 3 are 26 - 2 are 29... I have 4 on shelves 2 are 26 - 2 are 29. I ended up ordering a 26 tooth bowel gear from Herm so I would have enough OD's to swap whichever I had working into a rig at the time...

Take the cover off and count the teeth. They are too expensive to make a mistake.

I thought the 29 tooth only came in t-cases attached to the T-14 10 spline output transmission. These transfer cases would also have the 4.00" index hole

Wrong, the 29 tooth was used in most transfer cases with the 1 1/4" intermediate shaft although I heard ther are some rare exceptions. The T-14 used a unique 10 spline 29 tooth gear. All others were 6 spline.

thanks for all the help guys ;) my buddie has a 26 tooth gear, the od that i am looking at has a 1 1/8" intermediate shaft, so i am pretty sure it has the 26 tooth gear as well.
