Time for an Impact?

    Will using an impact gun on the pinion nut of a loose axle work easier than trying to brace everything up while I apply leverage?

    I don't have an impact - been waiting till I *really* needed one, but willing to go buy one if it'll make this work easier.

    Mike they are not always what there cracked up to be unless you get a good one, To me a good one better be rated at a around 450lb of torque or more, the standard 1/2" drive with 250 lbs of torque is generally worthless on things like pinion nuts. Now with that being said I have one of those small ones and use it quite abit but when I pulled my pinion nut on my dana 27 and 30 I borrowed the big one from work rated at 450 lbs of torque or more.

    Huh,...didn't come up on my searches.

    I think I'll skip all the parts that include swearing and go right for the impact gun...;)

    Mike - looks like it would do the job. I got a Craftsman rated at 600# in rev and 450 forward that seems to do most of what I need... at least it got a buddies pulled for him (he has the wimpy models).

    Then I barrow a 3/4 drive job that goes to 1500# if it's really stuck.

    Mike if that gun truly has 550lbs of torque thats probably good enough.
    Most 1/2" guns don't have that much torque but if it does that should work.

    I don't think I was clear...or I'm just too hungry..you're saying you *didn't* need to use that holder once you had the impact wrench?

    Closest Harbor Freight is 45 minutes away...so will probably head to Lowes....

    I can't remember what you have for a compressor, but that makes a huge difference in the performance of the impact. Most professional quality guns are rated at over 600 ft/lbs now, but won't come even close to that if they don't have a good supply of air. Most guns are rated at 90 psi. That 90 psi isn't tank pressure. It's sustained pressure at the tool inlet, with the trigger pulled. You are best off buying guns based on cfm. If you have a smaller compressor, buy a gun that uses less air.

    I bought the gun I linked to, held the yolk with my hand, and the nut spun off after hammering for just a couple seconds...:)

    Man, I didn't even get a chance to chime in. IMHO, my brother has an impact, and I love the thing... wish I had the coin for one of my own. Someday....

    I have the IR 1/2", the one that looks like it's made by fisher price.. (it's plastic) and that thing is the poop.. 625 in reverse and 450 FWD with 4 settings. If that don't get it we have a 2-1/2" drive impact that goes to ???????? ft/lb.. (yes that was 2.5")

    Good advice Ledge. I wanted my gun to run with optimal performance so I used a psi gauge between the tool (with trigger pulled) and inlet hose (3/8 ). I had to adjust my tank psi gauge to 110 psi to get the desired 90 psi at the gun with trigger pulled.
