    I'm with Posimoto on this. I've not had a D20 apart so I don't know for sure if there is a detent for 2L....

    I'm thinking the likely cause is that the springs behind the pills simply weakened with age. Further, I suspect that the 2L position will mysteriously disappear if new springs and pills are installed in the cleaned housing, rods are cleaned, etc. ;) :)

    I've had more apart than I care to recall and NONE of them have had a detent position on the shift rail. Doesn't mean there couldn't have been one, but I've rebuilt at least 100 Dana 20's and torn down a couple of hundred and never seen one. I've even seen a Dana 20 with only one speed from the factory! I'd have to go with an issue of wear, simple looseness in the shifter assembly (very common), or as Lynn said, detent springs losing their tension most likely. If you tear it apart and look at the shift rails and it does indeed have that position, PLEASE, post pics of it. It would be an extremely rare find. Nickmil.
