looking for confirmation

Hi everyone. Been a while since I have been to the site. I like the additional topic especially the trailers.....man I would like to have one of those some day. Let me cut to the chase. My jeep just started acting up this last weekend...I am guessing carb rebuilt time but thought I would throw it out to you guys to see what you think. Here are the symptoms 1) Jeep starts fine after sitting for a long time...like overnight long 2) runs fine once started but 3) seems to get flooded out and doesn't want to restart when shut off for short periods of time...10 min 4) will start fine if you shut it off and restart it immediately. Carb is a Rochester 2G. What do you guys think?

 

I don't know what causes this but I had exactly the same problem several years ago.
It went away on it's own.
I've still never rebuilt the carb but will some day.

Listening for an answer from someone who knows what this is. . . .

 

Any other ideas? or should I chalk it up to a gremlin and drive it AKCJ.

 

Sounds to me like vapor lock.
With the heat we have been having that would be my 1st guess.

 

I was think that too but if I start the jeep and shut it off before it gets to temperature it still acts like it is flooded when I let it sit and try to restart it.

 

I had a '71 440 Road Runner that drove me nuts in the summer time.
Would work great at night after the temps went down, but in the heat of the day.
It was vapor lock. Took a cool can to fix mine.
Check the routeing of the fuel lines, if they are close to the exhaust or are super close to the engine its more than likely boiling the fuel in the lines.
One thing to try, next time it does it, loosen the fuel cap for a second.
That was the fix on one of my buddies Jeeps.

 

I was going to suggest cracking the cap open as well. Try a new fuel filter, too. HTH

 

Mine did this years ago, I moved the fuel line away from the stock mount along the block and timing cover, I routed it out about 6" and then turned it up and went straight to the carb and removed the little bracket from the factory that held it to he timing cover and fuel pump. That solved my problem completely, your's may differ but your symptoms are the same that I had.

 

Another thing that I've done to reduce the under hood heat is header wrap. I'm not a big fan of header wrap but on the other hand I got tired of melted wiring too . . . .
It may have helped my carb problem but I still had the carb problem with the header wrap.
It comes in a roll and is held on with some stainless steel bands.
I think it's hard on the headers - rust. And it tends to collect mud then smells as it dries out.
Anyway, more positives than negatives for me.

 

Anyone know about phenolic spacers? I had someone suggest trying one for the carb and found this site http://www.cantonracingproducts.com/phenolic/spacers.html to get one

 

Yea kinda, I ran 850 (I think:? ) Thermoquad for awhile on the RR. Still had vapor lock.
