A couple of years ago I replaced the Speedo cluster. The Temp and Fuel gauges worked - for awhile. I did some checking and found the tank sending unit was not working  .

So a couple of months ago, I pulled the tank (it was leaking from the sending unit anyway) and replaced the sending unit (10 to 73 ohms), but the fuel gauge still did not work. Last month I put in a separate 2" fuel gauge and I was in heaven :p - I knew how much fuel was in the tank when we went for "a ride".

OK, so here's the question - this past Saturday, we were out riding and the fuel gauge went from 3/4 to pegged full! I have not started trouble shooting this yet other than to disconnect the sender wire (goes back to E) and disconnecting the Hot wire (goes to E) until I put the hot wire back and turn on the key - then pegs at Full.

I have read the link from the other fuel gauge thread and have that for reference now, but do you guys thingk that a 2 month sending unit would just go bad or should I think - Ground - SHORT?

This is on a 1975 CJ5 with a 2 year old Painless Wiring harness and no mods since putting it in. I'm getting the Hot lead from the cluster. Maybe I should try running a hot lead from the fuse block after testing the ohms at the sender??

It worked and then just BROKE  and the road was not that bad at all!

    Thank you,

I've had sending unit modules break off the assembly within hours of installation.
Next time will be an Accel Universal kit.

Look at the bright side - at $2.18/gal, I'd love to have my fuel self propagate.
