    the article sounds great but i can't for the life of me tell what i am looking at in the pics, and i don't see how it would work. let me display how my cable was run (before i snapped it)

    cable direction
    Clutch connection ---------->
    it forms a U and goes over the frame here
    Clutch petal connection <-----------

    when you depress the clutch pedal it pulled the cable tword the front of the Jeep and since the cable was in the shape of a U it pulled the clutch connection tword the rear. a simple design that works wonderfull IF the cable is clean and well lubed.

    in that article it looked as thogh it was a straight run in the last pic, where in the pic with the chain in it i couldn't see the frame. ugg i am confused

    There are two types of cables AFAIK - bare (ala the F134 4-cylinder) and sheathed. It sounds like you have the sheathed cable.

    Don't know specifically about the '71 model, but the '72 also had a sheathed cable. The sheathed cable was intended as an improvement to the older mechanical (bellcrank) design. In a CJ, there's so much movement (flex) between the drivetrain, body and frame, that it's possible to get to an attitude where the bellcrank-style clutch won't disengage. However, in '72, the sheathed cable failed (siezed) so often that the '73 model went back to the bellcrank, and Jeep issued a service bulletin. Dealers no longer replaced the cable; instead they installed the bellcrank kit.

    Theoretically, a cable should be good as long as the added friction of the cable in the sheath doesn't make the pedal effort too high. As I understand it, the AA chain kit isn't much different from the mechanical kit, except that it replaces the bellcrank and rod with a toothed wheel and chain. The chain allows for more flex between the body and frame.

    You can also go hydraulic, which has low friction and no problems with flex. You do get some additional maintenance/longevity issues with hydraulics though.

    If it were my Jeep, I'd run the stock cable for nw and see how it works out. I'd probably buy a spare cable to carry though... everybody ends up carrying their own selection of vital spares anyway, so this could be your first addition.

    BTW I would have guessed that you have the 992610, 58.25" long. I'm a little puzzled where you would put all that length with the floor-mounted pedals.

    I'm gonna go against the grain on this one, I have the factory cable driven clutch with the 58" cable, as far as I can tell my cable is the original. If you keep a little grease or oil in the sheathe they are fine. I built the chain driven unit like AA's awhile back, got the chain from "Old bill" just haven't installed it.
    Tim the cable comes off the pedal going back to the rear wheels and loops over the top of the frame and then turns back toward the clutch arm, they are very easy to replace, takes about 5 minutes tops.

    For the money stick with the stock cable and carry a spare. No more expensive than they are consider it a maintenence item and replace it every few years if needed.
