I'm looking to put front shoulder harness style belts in my Jeep and hook them to the rear bar. With the exception of modern Jeeps what other vehicles have you guys used belts from? I would use jeep belts but around here those are gonna be hard to find in decent shape and I don't want to spend the money (insert Boyink phrase:To Dutch) on aftermarket racing belts.

Mike I got the whole set of TJ belts for around $100 on eBay. Check there as there were often sets of just front belts.

    Some pics:
The pic of me in my rig in May 04 shows where I have the upper anchor mounted. The retractor was mounted on the front of the wheelhouse. This past spring I made a bracket and moved the retractor to the roll bar, similar to the pics shown in this thread:

I got mine out of a mid eighties dodge midsize somethin or other at the pick-n-pull. Real helpful eh?

Alright - here's something helpful - when deciding a donor look at the direction the retractor will point when mounting the belt and make sure you're proposed mounting will work without the belt twisting. My retractor mounts on the front of the wheel well so the retractor buldges towards the front of the jeep. Also, my retractors are not straight up and down, which I'm pretty sure contributes to them being a little too aggressive about locking you in (ask Joel - he was not impressed after a day of being locked in them in Big Bear).

If you do more than mild off-roading, auto-retractor belts suck. You can get into positions where you park the jeep at an odd angle and get out to look around only to find out that the auto retractor is locked until you level the jeep out. Look on ebay or local swap meets for some used racing harnesses, the stock car and drag guys can't use them once the date codes expire. They usually look new, and sell cheap.

Bob, that's why I moved mine from the front of the wheelhouse where yours are... to the roll bar mount where I have them now. They are much more reasonable on the trail now; they don't lock up nearly as easily.
It's easy to make the mount, as pictured in the link in my above post. A couple muffler clamps, a couple pieces of 2"x8"x1/8" stock, and a couple easy welds... :)

I got mine from JCWhitney. Typical harness, lap belt and shoulder. Non retractable.
I think I paid about $40 a piece. Bolted to the stock places on the wheelhouse and
the floor. Shoulder bolts to the cage.

so do you weld in a piece of tubing through the vertical roll bar and thread it for the shoulder anchor above the outside shoulder? or is there an easier way that is as safe when using TJ belts?

As far as I can tell that was the basic approach - except rather than tubing he used solid round stock:

Got my set up at a dirt tracker flea market type thing. Dirt trackers are required to replace the belts every so often, like maybe 3 years. This is probably true in other racing arenas as well. I paid 30 bucks for 2 sets of belts which included lap, shoulder and crotch belts ( 5 point harness). Unfortuneately, I only have the lap belts installed as yet. Shoulder belts will be installed and the crotch belts gonna get tossed.

    FWIW....

I had nice RJS racing 5 point harnesses in Dutch. I used the shoulder harnesses maybe twice. It was such a hassle getting all hitched in, and then not being able to "move" once the shoulder harnesses were in place (oh, the door opener is in the glovebox...here's let me unbuckle to get that), that we quickly just used the lapbelts.

This is why I went the OE route with SSDutch...figured if the belts were as easy to put on as the cars we drive everyday...at least we'd be wearing some sort of shoulder harness.
