I just purchased a hayden 14" electric fan to use as a pusher on my v6. I'm trying to control the temp in the woods while wheelin, when I was at Tellico this last may my temperature gauge made it to 230* several times in the woods on my newly rebuilt engine, needless to say I don't like that even if there did not seem to be any ill effects. How would you guys hook the switch for the fan control up, with a dash mounted toggle switch or with the temperature controlled kind.

I like the idea of the dash switch. That way, you're in control of it.

I like both so you can turn it off when fording streams but you don't have to pay as much attention to the gauge if you have something else distracting you on the trail( like that big rock right infront of you)

I voted just for the dash toggle. That way you wouldn't ahve it kicking on and off all the time. You can turn it on/off as you please like when on the trail and it starts to get hot. Knowing you Mike I'm sure you keep a close eye on your gauges when your driving and wouldnt overlook it starting to get hot. Plus I have been on a couple of rides and its really annoying when the vehicle's fan behind you keeps cutting on and off. Especially if its one of the louder types. JMO though

Reckon why it was running hot? Are you using the stock radiator? I know you just rebuilt the engine so there's definitely no scale in the water passages. I know your timing is correct b/c I borrowed your light at Tellico right after you used it...

If you have to run the electric fan, I'd go automatic w/manual override. In the flattie, I had only a manual switch, and I forgot about it several times. Trust me - you'll get caught up in the excitement of a trail ride and will forget to flip it on...

Agreed, Give yourself the option of auto or manual. If you forget to turn it on , it will do it itself, but if you find the thermostatic switch failing, or questioning your temperature, you can just switch it on and go.

Thanks guys, I just ordered an adjustable switch with the manual over ride feature on it, it was $39 and some change, Mr hasty will have it in tommorrow, got to love an old man that sells stuff at 5% over jobber cost and knows more about junk than 90% of the mechancis out there, not to mention he has some great stories and is very funny.

If your keeping the mechanical fan and using the electric, then I'd say just a switch.

If the electric is by itself with no mechanical fan then I'd use an automatic control with a manual override switch.

I just have the thermal switch. I'm running one out of a '87 Chevy Caviler. It screws into the intake. It works really good. It turns on at 210 and shuts off at 195. I needed a switch because I'm not running a fan on the motor.
