    Hi,
I am going to look at a 1964 CJ5 with 327 chevy motor in it. Has not ran in 9 years. No rust, some ding and dents. What should I be looking for?
He is asking $1000 is that fair market value? It did run when he parked it. He is someone I work with. Going to look at it this weekend.

Pat Green? Love your music. Allright, lame joke, I'm sure you hear that all the time.

First we need to know where you are, that'll affect the price.

But even without that $1000 probably is fair if the quality of the engine swap is high and you can get it running again without much fuss.

This question has been asked many times here in the past. I'd suggest you search the archives for similar topics.

Completeness, condition, location. A lot depends on the part of the country you're in. In CA, coastal OR or coastal WA, $1000 for a complete CJ-5 would be a low price, running or not. The SBC was a popular swap for the CJ in the 60s and 70s, more unusual now. Some 327s are quite valuable today - it'd be worthwhile to find out what car it came from. Does the swap look like it was done well? Does the Jeep have the original 3-speed transmission? Dents and most mechanical problems can be dealt with pretty easily. For $1000, you wouldn't expect a creampuff, anywhere in the nation.

I bought mine in klamath falls Oregon. Paid 950.00 complete with dauntless 225 and t86. No rust at all. Needed a little tlc to get it up and running, but I did a v8 swap anyhow. if it is solid I wopuld almost say you cant go wrong in Oregon for that price.

    Oooh, brake swap! ++++

I'd say the price is good. Pics definitely help, though.

Ford top loader 3-speed is the same as the Jeep T-150. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t150.htm (not Borg-Warner; Tremac under license from Ford).

    Sounds very promising...

A few people here and other forums guided me away from using the T150 on my swap, but my friend has one in his 46 flattie with a 304 and he doesnt give it any mercy and it has held up to ALOT of abuse over the last 10 years since he installed it as a used gearbox. Nothing wrong with it. Not saying anyone said there was, just chimin in. Cant wait to see pics. If you get it drop me a line , I live in coos bay, alot of sand over here to play in. Read the thread in garage pics. I was out there yesterday.

Here is the minority opinion ---- I'd run, not walk away from this. Especially as a beginner.

There are hundreds of ways to modify jeeps, and only a very few ways to do it right.

The odds are against you with a modified jeep. I've seen them done well, very well, but most times what you find is the product of a grand plan, very little money, a lot of beer, and a welding torch.

Many times the engine selection was based on "my friend has a wrecked 1978 __________, that has a good engine that he is willing to give me".

Usually they are advertised as "99% finished" or "hard work done, only 4 miles since engine change"

"Running when parked" is one of my personal favorites.

would need to see pics. IF quaility parts where used. could be a deal. IF hacked or appears to be hacked run very far away and continue the search.

Yea, I concur. I paid $4800 for a nice running jeep in California. It had transmission/Tcase whine which I thought was just low fluid. 300 miles later, I guessing to be forking out $1000 plus toward rebuilds from Herm. That is of course including upgrades.

    IE: Overdrive, twinsticks etc. :D

Another opinion - buy the best quality vehicle you can afford. Bargains come along sometimes, but generally you get what you pay for. Worrying about expense is pretty much moot IMO, since a hobby car is a dollar sink by definition. Buy what you can afford, enjoy what you have.
