Pretty basic questions again, but searches were not cutting it.

First off my engine takes a few turns to crank. Once started and warmed up it turns over quickly. Is this common? Also, my ballast resistor was not hooked up. How do I tell what type of coil I have to see if I even need to hook it up. There are no markings on it. If I do need it what is the proper wiring hook-up for it. Finally, I do not have a regulator. Do I need one? Everything works fine...I guess I am not sure what the regulator (Regulate voltage?) would do if I had one. Everything is standard (except alternator) for the era, points, etc. Oh, except the painless harness I just installed.

    Thanks

Ok here are Pics. I understand that some alternators replace or remove the need for the regulator. I am not sure which alternator I have. As far as the ballast resistor I see alot of talk with the V6 but not much with the f134. I needed I will wire it, but which wire do I hook up to which side of the resistor? I am assuming it is an inline wiring of some sort.

(+) from your ignition run position runs through the resistor to the (+) side of the coil. (-) out to the distributor.

You've circled your wire on your starter solenoid.

Follow the wire from the side of the distributor back to the coil. That's the (-) or should be. Other side is (+).

OK sorry here is the right picture

I have one power wire to positive side of coil. The negative has the distrib. wire and a wire running to the tach meter.

So...if I understand this I run the positive wire to the ballast and then another wire from the other side of the ballast and then to the positive side of the coil.

Either I am right or Sparky will terminate all my rights and jump through the monitor and choke me!! :)

    Yes.

You should also have another wire from your ignition switch start position directly to the (+) side of the coil for starting then the run position of the switch goes to your ballast then to the coil (sorta optional but helps with starting).

For now take the wire that's there. Put it on the ballast and run another from the ballast to the coil where the wire you just removed was.

WTF is the purple wire on the coil?

Delco 10si is the ALT...internal regulator.

If you ever need to replace it ask for one from a 78 chebby truck........

If I am not mistaken the coil may have the internal resistor.......

Ok, how do you tell? I knew it may as well, but operate on the assumption that it doesn't since most don't that I've encountered unless they specifically say somewhere.

It should be stamped on the wire about every 6 inches on a Painless harness....

Trust me I'm sure there is some questionable stuff on mine also, just for electrical connections I like to make sure it isnt going anywhere. LIke on the coil use the little connectors with the hole in the end (not sure what the proper term is) so it will slide over the terminal. that way even if the nut loosens at least it wont come unhooked.
