Did a one time top speed test in the 65 CJ5 yesterday. I have 5.38 gears, Warn Overdrive, 31X10.5 15" tires with the V6 Engine, weight 2750 lbs. It went right up to 80 mph and was smooth on the highway at that speed. Not sure if it could have gone faster but for me I was feeling a bit nervouse if something might go wrong! I guess things are now tuned up good and running right, very happy with the perfomance of it. Mark H.

    80...

I am quite content at 60mph in the JEEP. 61 scares me...

I drove mine on the interstate to Tellico, up I-59 to I-24/I-75 interchange and across to US64 at 70 mph for nearly 90 miles never missed a lick and felt quite confortable, with the exception of when a semi passed at about 80mph, then I would kinda worry a little. Then finished on to Tellico on US64 at about 55 for the other 80 miles or so. Most of it is driving perception and I really think that power saginaw makes a huge difference in ease of driving, especially at that speed.

Yes I am! It's still in the back of my mind that this Jeep was built for about 40mph from factory. No sense turning it into a time machine ;)

I'd say that mine could probably make it to 100 with 3.73's, 33" tires, and an OD ;)

    However I'm perfectly happy at 65 :)

Windows wern't down but the doors were off on the soft top! Kind of strange looking down at the road buzzing by that close sitting in the seat!! I was wondering if I would lose my new hat I was wearing at the time! With all this heat and no rain for a long time to come I'm tempted to remove the top completely just once for the summer! Thats funny!
My buddy got mine up to 50 late one night on paved back road and he was just letting off the gas when the linkage came flying loose. Boy that spring on the carb let her fly. She went wide open. We both liked to have pooped our pants. We did not wether to bail out or what. It was so funny after we got it shut down, we just both stood in the middle of that road and made fun of each others expression when that happened. Ah memories

Gee I thought the object was to go slower than everyone else with reduction gearing.

I think 40 is about the top speed i've had my jeep. I like to imagine cracking up at 65+ with lap seat belts and no roll cage. That would be cool!

mine was at 85 once, it even did it without the motor in. It was on a trailer at the time. Leaves and stuff blowing out the back people giving strange looks, man it was fun.

According to the Speed/Gear Chart my engine was doing 3500 rpms at 80 mph. For a short period of time I don't think that would be hard on a good running engine. I like to cruse 60 and the chart shows it at 2600 rpms and I see no reason why it could not do that for a long time on the road. I have Overdrive so that helps big time when in high. Here is the site I use. Mark

In my '73 CJ with 31s and 4.27s I ran around 3000 on the freeway. I drove up the Cajon Pass at around 80, and was power limited, not rev limited (under 4000).

Most cars, including Jeeps, have a top speed that's power limited, not rev limited. People don't appreciate the barrier imposed by wind resistance, which goes like the square of velocity. With a modern engine in good shape, you should be able to run 4000-5000 all day long. Whether you have enough power to get to the corresponding speed is another question.

heck, mine will go in the fast lane on 85 through atlanta anytime and keep up with everyone. mike's right though, feeling the steering switch from side to side in the play at 75-80ish aint much fun... which is why i got saginaw parts coming in left and right. next is probably going to be some sort of brake booster with a swap to swinging pedals. already got them located, just got to get the right guy in the junkyard to quote me a price.
