I need a 4spd for an early CJ5 4cly. F head any ideas??? I'm building a jeep tractor and i boxed the frame with 3/8" plate so the 3speed just isn't going to move it. It has a PTO w/hydraulics and a steel dump body in process too plus lockers F&R its much better than any Kawie or polaris mule if ya know what i mean. Its my future yard vehicle and snow removal machine. I have one already(jeep tractor but the frame is rotten) and it pushes snow like no other thing i have ever had. :JEEP: It only lacks weight and lockers which the new one has. Where can i find a 4sp trans that will bolt up??? :? The 4banger F head in my first tractor just won't die, she is named "Christine" she sits all summer and starts on the first revolution everytime its the best engine i have ever seen. BigBill

What ratio is in the axles. Look for some 5.38's. I don't know of a "direct" bolt in 4 speed for it but the 5.38's with a D-18 3:1 conversion will get you a pretty dang low crawl ratio but the 3.1 gears are $$$.

There is a Borg-Warner T-98 4-speed that was optional on the F134 CJs. The only problem is they are well-known (to most F134 CJ owners), scarce and expensive. Not much else is available.

I have 5:38's but i was looking for the 4spd with the granny gear to have all the low end grunt she can muster with the stock 4 cylinder. You can never have too much gearing. Gearing and posi's are more important than size of the motor. I have a 4way plow for snow but i have another 2 way plow i may convert for pushing dirt/gravel just to keep the dirt roads level and looking pretty too. I have invested almost $1,200 now and you can buy much of a new yard vehicle for that nor have anything that will come close to it too a mule costs 8k? With the added frame weight, the lockers with 4 sets of chains she should push some awesome snow. My stock regular one with just a seat on the frame with chains did push snow but it lacked the authority because of no weight. I did have cement blocks on the back at one time but with the rotted frame it was taking a chance. With the good '73 CJ5 frame I have and the added boxed 3/8" plate it should out last my lifetime. I'll have to post pics of my old one and my new one. BigBill

I was a jeep mechanic back in the mid 70's but i was into chevy 4x4's then but i got the jeep bug and I built a 1980 CJ7 with 304v8 4 spd, w/427 gears w/posi dana 30 front and dana 44 posi rear it would plow snow great it was a bear but the frame rotted too. (high milage) My new 99 TG was ordered with all the goodies when i bought her new like the dana 44 373 posi rear, the heavy duty "No overdrive trans" but its too new to plow with yet I'd rather use the jeep tractor and build the '99 for off road fun. Its the wifes car right now she loved the 80 so much and missed it she wanted a new one so i spec'd out the new for her with all the goodies.
