Engine Overheating Frustration

    We are restoring a 1968 Jeep CJ5 with its original Buick V6 engine. We cannot resolve an overheating problem, although we think we've tried everything. New hoses, radiator flush, new radiator cap and thermostat. Water pump is working fine and it has anti-freeze. We are at the point of removing the freeze cap to flush the engine, but can't find it!! Can someone help us locate that, or give other suggestions as to things we might try? It is odd that the car can idle forever and not overheat, but when we take it on the road, it overheats within a few blocks. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Just a radiator flush might not do the trick. Could be still clogged inside, I'd suggest taking it to a radiator shop and have them go through it.

    With all the info you gave me I can suggest 2 things. One is a clogged radiator, the other would be incorrect ignition timing. Little known fact the impropper ignition timing can cause alot of excess heat in a motor. Good luck

    I agree with both. Check your timing, and have the radiator rodded.....

    Thank you. We may resort to that. My spousal unit just removed a bolt in the engine and, as he probed inside, he found a lot of "gak". He found the freeze plug and is in the process of removing it to have a look-see. I appreciate your reply.

    Pound a screwdriver or punch into it towards the edge. Hopefully the plug will push in on one side, while the other side pushes out, and you can latch onto it with a pair of pliers........

    Also, don't expect a std flush to be really effective. I hadda use a pressure washer to blow crud out. I did it on a SBC.

    Check total advance to make sure vacuum advance is workin'. Don't stop with just setting initial advance.

    what pressure is the cap? is the water pump impeller turning the correct way? spark timing okay? front of rad blocked?
