I'm a new owner of a '59 CJ 5 pretty basic, near original. No door hinges, just a hole in the door frame (filled with mud) front bottom and top, no hinges. I'm initially just looking for a fabric 1/2 door, (how do I secure the top part?) should I waste my time, or just go get some hinges and install a metal half door?

    Thanks, Terry

    Howdy from W. MI.

"Embrace the open Jeep door!" ;) I love the open feeling of riding down the road with a foot out the doorway.

But if you can't....here's a set of fabric 1/2 doors on eBay. Should fit the ECJ5's as well -- you should be able to get the necessary hinges from Bestop Customer Service.

I guess I don't get the concept of half doors. Here in the desert, we either run a full hard or soft top, to keep out the cold or the (rare) rain or snow, or we run topless. In the summer, I might run the Bestop on my CJ3A "safari style", just to keep the sun from cooking my brain, but never with doors. Are half doors just for looks, or do they serve a purpose, like keeping mud off, or maybe keeping people from laughing at the driver's knobby knees?

Do a good job of keeping mud off me here and keeping stuff in the Jeep footwells. Backpack, etc.

Some people new to jeeps have a problem with not having something next to them while riding in a jeep. I have know a couple of women/girls who were pretty much weirded out by the lack of a door beside them while riding in a jeep (even with seat belts).

You have to admit that when the major car companies are selling side airbags and crash test ratings every evening on the tube. Riding in in a Jeep when the first thing to stop a pickups front bumper in a wreck is you can give people a little caution.

Having a half door isn't any safer but it does help with the mental thing a little.

The half doors keep the wind down at highway speeds. My Jeep is my DD, so when i go to work every morning, my after-work- change- of clothes can ride on the passenger seat and not blow out.....
When we do trails where ther is mud, the half doors keep mud out of the Jeep and off of me......
Heck, there are lots of pro's and con's...... Or just whatever you want... I put the bikini on my Jeep several times through the summer, just because I can, and the Jeep looks different..........YMWV
