Havnt been on in ahwile since the CJ has pretty much consumed all of my time among other projects.

Im at a stale mate with my 63'. I cant locate a reasonably priced starter for the 134 under 3-400$.

So for that price, especially here in Utah, I can put a chebby 4.3l or a 5.7l in for that price at near complete assembly.

Another option is I kept my 283 from my Chevelle and had thaughts of putting that under the hood.

The question I pose to everyone who reads is what engines other than the 134 will bolt straight to the T-98 trans?

If you can put a 4.3 or 5.7L chevy in a '63 cj5 (successfully), for $400 I'll pay the bill. Sound like a good bet?? Does to me.

Nothing will bolt directly to that transmision other than an L134 and that wouldn't be a real good swap.

Do you have the old starter?? Take it to a good auto electric shop and have it fixed. That is almost always cheaper for me.

I think the only option would be another jeep engine as the T98 used in the Jeeps has a unique bell housing input shaft not used by any other manufacturer. To put your 283 in front of it you are looking at a whole lot more then 3-400.00 everything from tranny bell housing adapter, to cooling, and exhaust most like a lot of sheet metal work motor mounts and then soon afterwards you will need to start replacing those stock parts that can't handle the 283's torque.

but I have been told not to be so negitive when answering modification posts so..

GO for it sounds like a fun project LOL

    but it won't be cheap

We didn't say you couldn't point out issues that might arise in posts.

If you don't like the way we moderate the forum this is not the place to address that or comment on it. The announcements and page and forum discussion or private messages to us mods is more appropriate.

FWIW, I purchased a starter for an F-head here for $25 plus shipping. Looked brand new when I got it.

That's a lot cheaper than anything else you've mentioned.

If I were to go with the Chebby swap it would be a full drivetrain swap all the way down to the axles.

As for fab, not worried, I have most all the tools and skills to make most of what I need, mounts, brackets, etc.

I have the 134/98/18 right now and really wanted to keep this one as stock as possible without eating it in the end.

I did a 4.3l swap in my 65' with an isuzu 44 rear and a XJ 30 front for around 450$ (baught the whole S10 and stripped it).

If you found a starter for 25$, Ill put this out: If anyone has a operational or a nonoperational starter I will be willing to deal for it plus shipping. Feel free to pm me or post up.

PS: Mark I dont think you were being negative in anyway, its the internet afterall and in my time of being a fabricator and a offroader, Ive learned to grow a thick skin behind my keyboard ninja skills. R)

Id much rather have brutal honesty than a dance around the bush.

your t-98 won't work with another engine other than the L head.

If you swap out the engine, the t-98 transmission / transfer case along with the drive shafts, all the clutch hardware from the clutch pedal to trans, and the floor plates ought to bring around 1200. All the clutch claptrap is uinque to the t-98 application, so you wouldn't need that stuff if you were going to swap out the engine. Transmissions alone go for around 850, and it is a bargain to be able to get the other hardware for only an additional 350.

Having all that stuff fabricated / modified would be expensive,

Now, I wouldn't pay that much for it, but I wouldn't sell my t-98 hardware from my 1970 cj5 for less.

That said, a starter should be easy to find. You can get them rebuilt for very few $$ and it'll work like new! And when you are tired of your jeep and want to sell, the f4/t-98 would be a real plus in terms of price.

The $300-400 price you're quoting sounds like the cost of a 24V starter. Napa Online shows a starter for the F134 at $77. Maybe you need to find a more helpful/cooperative auto parts store?

I had only called the local stores with no avail. I looked into the 6v and 12v starters form Krage and 4wd both were in the 299-399$ range.

I guess the the napa online store is the ticket.

would try local auto electrical shop and get the old one rebuilt. might also try army surplus house and see how long the 24v lasts on 12v.

you don't need to change starters to change to 12v, That 6v starter will crank like mad and last forever. Were there '63's with 6 volt systems??

like Jb says, run the 6v starter with 12v, just don't let it turn over in long spells
ran mine that way for.... a long time

badcop: you can install whatever your time and money will allow

The Napa site is funny wrt the F134 Jeeps. If you look under 1971 instead of 1963, it'll be there. I'm pretty sure this is the same starter - no changes in the configuration or options for the F134 CJs between 1963 and 1971 (the last year) AFAIK.
