i need to get a solid cover made for the sm420 and was wondering if anyone has any ideas. i guess the easiest thing would just be a flat box, but i am not sure how ugly that would be. it has to at least cover the od shifter since it is right next to the tranny. the twin sticks could possibly be left out. i will post a pic of the setup soon.

pics are needed of everyone's home-made covers so now's the time to show us your skills :p

of course i saw those already! you kind of inspired me to get going on mine. finishing the overdrive linkage was holding me up also.

i think you did a good job, but i am not convinced that i want to cover the whole tranny area with a big box. understand that the sm420 top is huge compared to the t14 and with the od shifter next to it the box will be quite wide. i might have to bring the box down between the tranny and the od and then have flat metal with a hole cut for the shifter.

    thanks, chris

the part i am going to work on next is the black piece for the trany shifter. the tower sits closer to the firewall then the t-15 did. also the shifter boot i found in the wrecker is just a tad too big as well. so i am just going to " masage" it a little, i dont think it will look much different then it does now..........well, except better ;)

thanks for the nice words, and i am glad what i have done is helping another jeep get done

I recognize those floor boards, M38. What is your set up? What engine, which adapter, is that a twin stick 18 tcase or did you twin stick a 20? I am puting a 327/SM420/Dana18 in a 52 M38 and was wondering if you have a similiar set up and had much trouble doing it?

Mine is very similar to rocnrol's except with an extra hole for the overdrive lever. I'll have to check for pics of mine.

cardboard is your friend for making templates

Here's photos of what I did. I have the 465/D18 twin stick/Overdrive. The trickiest part was actually the driver side. Making sure you have enough room to operate the throttle comfortably.

i like it too... good job! thank you very much for the pics.

do you have a pic with the cover completly off? just wondering what you had to deal with. ie, why did you have to take room away from the driver side? seems like the cover could fit on the original edge of the bottom plate.

    thanks, chris

Awe Gee  I didn't know it was a contest. R)

That is what I came up with after about 4 different design failures. :D

My cover was pretty butchered from previous owners, but it does follow the outline of the original bottom plate. The 465 is a pretty big tranny, and I wanted my size 11's to fit without being cramped. Here is some other pics I found.

thanks, your setup is very close to mine so it is very helpfull to see how you came up with that design. i hope mine ends up looking half as good as yours!

btw, how exactly does your twin stick setup fit next to the 465? looks like it is REALLY tight!

It is tight. I had to grind a little off the trans case, and also some off the stick holder. I also had to grind a little off the pin that goes through the sticks, as well as drill and tap the housing on the outside for the retaining screw that holds the pin from walking out.
I also used the torch to bend all the levers to where I wanted them.
I used 16 gauge sheetmetal for the whole cover assembly. Made it easy to weld without warping (I am impatient  )
