I need to replace the speedometer head in my '65 CJ5. I need a source! None of my catalogs list the speedo heads for the old style CJ5.
    Help?

Carl Walck has NOS speedometer clusters with the single digits, in MPH.
Beware of others that are in KPH...

I got mine from www.jeepdoc.com It's a VDO. Pretty well built.
I used VDO gauges on my railbuggy years ago. Lasted quite a
while (10 years) even out in the open.

Thanks Guys, I'll check out the jeepdoc place. I paid over $100 for a replacemnet speedo head for a '60 Willys about 20 yrs ago, so the $150 is not an unexpected price.

Carl Walck also has used 0-9 speedo clusters for $50. I just bought one today for my '70. He says his new ones don't look the same. I will update again once it is installed.

How hard is it to take the speedo apart and install the new face and guts?

I have a 66 that really could use a new face, it has the singel digits 0-9 and I would like to keep it somewhat stock.

That was my idea, too, but after taking it apart, I think it would be difficult unless you had some really fine tools. The face on mine appears to be held to the odometer with two small rivets. I'm pretty sure I would end up defacing it before it was all said and done. I was thinking, though, maybe a jeweler who is experienced in handling old clocks would be able to get it off and back on without too much damage. I would still like to get my old one fixed as a spare, since they appear to be fairly hard to find.

I too have looked at removing the face from the speedo assembly and replacing or restoring it somehow but I noticed that yes, the face is held on by those two small rivets BUT the trick looked to be how to get the speedo needle off of the shaft without distorting the very, very thin gauge spring behind the face? I haven't tried it yet.

BTW, a year or two ago, before I knew about earlycj5.com, a "nos" speedo head was sold on fleabay for around (IIRC) 250.00   :smash: Haven't seen another "nos" unit before or since

Once you got past the rivets and needle spring, paint and stencil or vinyl graphics should be easy, sort of........

I installed my $50 Walck's used speedo cluster today. Everything works. I will say, however, that you get what you pay for.

Mine had a mangled mounting tab that took some work with a C-clamp to get straight again. The black trim ring around the outside of the glass had a lot of paint flaked off where it appears that some PO's ignition keys were rubbing. The needle was intact, but the orange paint is flaking off that as well. The speedo needle was also rubbing against the face of the guage. On my first test drive, it would accelerate fine but then stick when deccelerating, so I had to take the glass off and give it a little 1/16" pry.

Other than that, I think it was a good deal for $50, considering I don't know of anyone reproducing the 0-9 dial. The speedo is pretty accurate, and stays very steady.

There's actually a place here in Denver that rebuilds old speedos for classic cars. I'm thinking about taking my speedos by there when the time comes. I have two of the early ones that only go up to 8, but they're not the '55 speedo that says Willys on it. I think they're '56 models, but I'm not sure. My Jeep is a '56, and I'm assuming that's the original speedo. The other one was a freebie from Grumpy58, and it's just like mine. All the rest I see go up to 9.
