I just picked up a 59 CJ5, it has a "Super Hurricane" flat head six installed with what looks like a T-90 and a Dana 18. It has a severe lack of power in high range, it will barely climb my drive. If I slip it into low range it feels like it should in high range. It has a new fuel pump, new points, rotor, cap, and wires. The engine seems to run fine it is smooth, no smoke. It seems like the thing is geared way too high. I jacked up the rear an counted revolutions of the drive shaft and I came up with about 5 and a 1/3 for one rotation of the tire. Any ideas? I can take pics of the driveline if anyone is willing to help. Any input would be appreciated. Scott

the 6 cyl in a 5? it sounds like it has 5.38 gears so it is geared low. maybe timeing? or else your carb might need a rebuild.

someone who knows something should respond soon.

Is there an overdrive sticking out of the back of the transfer case by chance? How many shifters does it have?

First thing that comes to mind is the timing is retarded quite a bit. An engine will do just like described run good but have no power.

It does not look like it has an overdrive attached. It does have a PTO attached. so it is difficult to see the back of the transfer case. I will see if I can make out any markes on the dampner and put the timing light to it. It has a Rochester "2 Jet" on it, I'm not sure if that's original. The links below are for the engine pics.

That engine should have PLENTY of power in high range.

Burning oil? Done a compression check? If the timing's not retarded.

Ok, made some progress... The timing wasn't even close. I rotated the distributor counter clockwise quite a bit and things are better. I have to adjust the idle (really high now) and it smells like it is running a little rich but it is much better. Thanks for the help.
