First off I would like to apologize for posting on this site since it is a CJ site but I have valued the opinions of people on here when needing help with my CJ and figured that this site would be a great resource as it seems a lot of people here know a lot about engines. Anyway if you could help me out I would really appreciate it. Here's the scoop...

I have a 99 Jeep with the 2.5 litre engine. I took the valve cover off and noticed that a push rod for cylinder 2 is bent. All push rods move up and down when cranking the engine. When removing the spark plug from cylinder 2 I noticed that the center elctrode has been broken off. I removed the rockers and put a straight edge across the valves and one of the valves for cylinder 2 seems to be open. When I put my finger on the spark plug hole and bar the engine over I get no compression, (suction or blow). I get compression on all other cylinders while doing the same thing. Also when barring over the engine I notice a clinking noise. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

    Thanks

P.S. Does anyone know where I can get a special socket to remove the head also if anyone is familiar with these engines?

You NEED to pull the head on that engine, there is something seriously amiss there. Off hand, I'd say there is a very good chance that you have a bent valve, which will require the head to be pulled anyway, and after having the spark plug bits rattling around in there I wouldn't be comfortable with runnig that engine without having a looksee in there.

The special socket is just a 12 point socket, you may already have one. I can't remember the size off hand, I just had mine off a few months ago. You should be able to pick one up at your FLAPS if you don't have one. You may want to pull the exhaust/intake manifold before you take the head off.

I took the head off tonight and found that the piston is completely gone. The cylinder walls are scored a little too. I was wondering if anyone could give me a little advice as to pricing and what they think is the best thing to do. Here are the two options that I was thinking of.

Option 1: Hone the cylinder wall, get a new piston, get oversized ring for piston, take head to a machine shop to get the head redone because of the valve, new head gasket, new exhaust gasket, and a new intake gasket.

Option 2: Trade my engine in for a rebuilt engine. I have no interested in swapping in any other engine other than the same 2.5 Litre engine. No interest in the 4.0L or anything else.

If anyone lives in Michigan do you know of a place where I could get a rebuilt 2.5 litre in the area, I live in norther oakland county.Does anyone have any advice as I have never been in a situation like this and could really use some. What do you think is the best bet for me? Any thoughts?

    Thanks a lot

    YIKES!

I'd see if you couldn't find a low mileage 2.5 or reasonable mileage 2.5 from someone who's putting in a 4.0L or V8.

The pistons just gone? Where'd it go? You probably have other issues now like metal in the oil pump-lubrication system. That motor is done. I'd recomend a complete rebuild if you can swing it. Or just swap in a 4.0. :D

find a junk yard engine or someone who pulled one to put in a bigger motor. Sounds like the engine you have is worthless as a core if the damage is as extensive as you say.

To bad your not in The Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I know a great engine rebuilder.

ATK Engines delivered my 2.5 (Iron Duke) long block to my front door and picked up the core two weeks later. Very helpful on the phone. About 1200 bucks. See website.
