After installing a "Painless" wiring harness i'm considering installing a push button start. I've aquired a Moroso 5 switch console with push button start switch so now all I need is a bit of knowledge before I jump in with my meter and rip it apart. What I would like is to keep the ignition key switch (to slow the thiefs down) and just divert power to a control panel switch which will inturn put power to the push button start... Anyone with any suggestions or helpful advise??? Thanks..

Just so I know I'm understanding you right, you want to have it so you turn the key AND push a button to start, correct?

If this is the case just cut one of the wires going to your key (doesn't really matter which) and install the button in line with that.

You could also just parallel two wires from the starter solenoid to your pushbutton switch so that either the button or the key switch will turn the starter over. That way you'd still need the key to make the ignition fire. If you wanted, after the button is working you could clip one wire to the column-mounted switch and thereby disable the key-mounted starter switch.

Why not install something similar to a clutch safety switch. Make the push button a momentary switch which you use only during starting. I am going to do something like that on my Jeep. It is currently wired for it, but I have not finished wiring due to other projects on the Jeep and my K3500 - diesel engine replacement :( .

It's a good idea, Old Jeeps are easy to hot wire, the harder you make it to steal, the less likely it will be gone in 30 sec.

Ok Thanks, I've finally got a steering column that works by combining two to make one with a working steering lock,, combined with a complete jeep re-wire, next is to wire in my pushbutton start and move all my dash switches to my remote panel. The plan is to use the key to unlock the column and then flip a switch for power and push the button to start,, if nothing else it'll be the Nascar effect.. Thanks again..

Easiest way is to just run the wire for the starter solenoid to a push button on the dash. Leave the key in place to turn all the power on. And use the botton to start it.

Not really about electrical ideas to stop a thief but My little brother came up with a great idea.

He once had a loan that he was a bit slow on repaying his 73 CJ5 was the security. He just knew they were going to come out and repo it. SO he borrowed a jack hammer from work dug about a 5 gallon bucket sized hole in the middle of his driveway where the Jeep parked. He then made a loop out of 3/4 rebar bent a couple of 90's on the ends of the legs and cemented this loop resessed into his drive way. Looked like a clean out for a septic tank or something. He then went down and bought the heaviest chain he could find. The links were as big as my thumb! took the chain wrapped it around the jeep through the door openings snugged it down and using this huge padlock that had been something the Railroad used to lock up something at one time He chained his jeep to the drive way.

Don't know if it ever stopped a repoman but it worked the Jeep sure stayed put LOL

Finished the push button start project, ended up finding the wire from the steering column switch that ran to the starter relay cut it and redirected it to a push button momentary on my switch panel, I did the same thing with the hot wire to the coil running it to a on off switch. So now in order to start it the key has to be turned on which unlocks the column and directs power to my switch panel, the switch for the ignition is switched on and button pushed and walllaaaaa my AMC 360 comes to life.. Thanks for the help..

I did the same thing with my Jeep, except I used a momentary toggle switch with a red protective cover (you know, like the ones you see in fighter jets). Very cool, and very helpful when you have to re-start on the trail. I was bending the hell outta my key.
