well, after a few bad attempts at wiring the hei I finally got to fire up the new engine tonight :D

so far i am very happy with how it sounds and runs... can't wait to test it out on the road!

just need to make all the timing/carb adjustments and put my floor back together. a lot of you probably know how exciting it is to start up a new motor... i am glad i finally got to experiance it. i can only imagine what it is like to rebuild your own engine and crank it up for the first time. maybe someday i will attempt something like that!

Good deal Chris! Did you go with another 225 or a 231?

    it's another 225...

i really don't remember what all was done to it, but when i had the oil pan off all the internals looked new and very pretty. i got it from someone on the board last spring who had it rebuilt and then found a good deal on an engine with fuel injection. i do recall that the engine has zero miles on it, just ran it in the garage to make sure it was all good.

i am getting ready to go start it up again and do some fine tuning. might possibly take it around the block if everything goes well.

IIRC you got that from MRuta, who's going the 4.3 route now.

I've replaced many motors for my customers over the years, and I still get tingly and proud every time I fire one up......

i took it out for a little drive tonight and it just purrs. i always thought oddfires were just normaly a little rough, and maybe they are but compared to the old one this is great :D

so how carefull should i be with it and for how long? does it need to "break in"?

    thanks, chris

I've heard dozens of "break-in" scenarios over the years.
I think it's best that for the first 500 miles, no extremes... don't rev it too high, don't lug it down. And don't hold a steady RPMs for long periods, like driving 60 mph for 2 hours straight... vary your RPMs as much as possible; no more than 10 minutes at any given rpm.
Of course, I might be all wet with that... but it seems that it's a strategy that won't get you into any trouble ;)

My favorite break-in story was when I was in high school, one of the guys a year or so ahead of me bought a Dart 340 6-pack... the break-in strategy he used was to run each gear to the red line, then back down.
So 1st, to red line, then back. Then 1st to the redline, 2nd to the redline, then back. Then 1st, 2nd and 3rd to the redline... then the same with 4th!! The state was building a bypass around town at the time, it wasn't quite finished but a few miles were ready, just not open. Alot of racing took place there for a few months. Closed course!! R)
I wouldn't condone this guy's strategy, but that car sure was fast!! I don't recall him ever getting beat :D

Glad to hear you're happy with it Chris! That engine is stock with the exception of a Comp Cams high energy cam kit and stainless valves. That engine was fun to build. I first started it up on the afternoon of Sept. 11th, 2001. The only mileage I put on it was backing my Jeep in and out of the garage. I guess it would be more accurate to measure that in feet.
