Wow what a fun thing, laying in the dirt under your jeep prying at the overdrive. Herms directions say pry with 2 screw drivers, Novaks says don't pry, tap it with a block of wood or soft hammer.
I have it about 3/4 inch out, how far does it need to go to come loose?

your are getting there. If I recall, mine was a bugger to get in there. Had to pull it in with the bolts. Getting it out could be just as bad. There really isn't anything that will be damaged by pulling it out. Unless you get carried away with the pry bars. Once you get the unit off, there is a really special "nut" that holds the gear in there, with a really special lock ring. Herm can explain this better than I can.
    Good luck!

Same deal here. It'll come, just be patient. Don't get carried away with too much force or you can crack the housing,I think thats why Novak says to tap it. Mine came out about 3/4" and seemed to be stuck. With a little leverage applied and a few taps around the edge, alternating sides you can get to it'll pop off.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I'm going back to try again this morning. I was getting frustrated last night and have learned when to give it a rest.

There is a bearing that fits snug inside a sleeve that is hard to pull apart. If you have it 3/4" out allready it has about 1/3" to go befor it pops out. The bolt idea is a good one, pull your bolts and slip them back in with nuts and washers if you can under the housing and turn each one a little working around like you would lug nut to push it out the rest of the way. There should be a clover leaf shaped lock ring down inside above the special nut holding the center section to the Transfer case when you get the main section poped off. This snap ring holds a special lock nut that goes inside the hex shaped hole that you use a 1/2" extention to go into it to unbolt it. Once you remove the snap ring and lock nut you can put the extention into the nut and unbolt the rest of it from the transfer case. Mark
