I notice that when I come into the garage my CJ smells like gas. I also notice the next day after running the fuel filter is empty. Could my fuel pump be bad and allowing the fuel to leak back? Could this cause the fuel smell? How much do fuel pumps generally run if this may be the case. Also did these jeeps come with a metal enclosed filter...mine is just a plastic one with the screening within.

    Thanks

Check all rubber fuel line for cracks. I've had some go bad within 6 months. Others last 15 years, both fuel rated... :? You just can't assume that since the lines were replaced "recently" that they haven't cracked already.

Yes, fuel pump diaphragm can go bad. It can allow fuel into your crankcase. Best to just replace the fuel pump, they aren't that expensive... maybe $25 IIRC...

Either of these can lead to a strong smell of gas in your garage. But in addition to that...
The fuel system in a '68 CJ is "open" , not a sealed system like modern cars. The fuel cap is vented intentionally, enough that you can smell it in your garage. Then if you have either of the above problems, or sloshed some out through the cap vent before you parked it, it can smell even worse.

Then there's always the possibility of a leak in your underseat tank... ;)

    HTH!!

Have you changed the oil recently?

If you got too much oil out then your fuel pump diaphragm is most likely bad causing the fuel filter to empty into the crankcase. Common to happen on these engines.

I think I have this problem!!! When I drained my oil, there is a strong smell of gas and there was about 6 quarts of oil that came out!!! Do i need to change the entire fuel pump, or can you just change the diaphram? Are these pumps expensive? Do they still make these? Oh no, I think I am heading into some unplanned work!!!

I just bought the fuel pump from Krage...I hope this takes care of the blue smoke too..I think that because the oil was soooo diluted with gas, that it was seaping into the cylinders and burning...Thanks for your help.

can't be as bad as mine had w/oxygen hose for gas line. IF the filter is not below the tank, the gas will run out of it.
