OK I got it running but when I try to drive it something is locked up. It rolls easily out of gear but yesterday in first it locked un=til something popped and now it will go forward.
Now it is locked trying to go in reverse.
    What could it be?
I'm thinking of putting it up on jack stands to see what it does.

broken tooth off of a gear in the tranny is my guess. the tooth is getting in between other gears and might be doing damage.

I pulled the cover off and it spins forward really well. In reverse it is squueling. It has been sitting for several years with little oil in the trans. I'll pick up gear oil and bring it up to proper level. I think the sysc rings are sticking.

OK, I put gear oil in up to the fill plg. No help. Open to suggestions.
How hard is it to pull the Transfer case off the back of the trans? I figure Ill drop the rear drive shaft and check the rear diff. If it is a locker, could it be creating this. The single stick lever is sloppy as all get out, could it be getting between gears and locking?
    Any other ideas?

The D18 tcase weighs ~80 lbs dry, not to heavy. Awkward removing and replacing it by yourself, but doable.

You might consider removing the pan from the D18 and taking a look, Also with the tranny, maybe drain it then go fishing inside with a magnet and mirror, see if you find anything...

There was recent discussion here somewhere about replacing a bronze bushing in the single stick assembly that makes it shift positively, like new. IIRC, the bushing was available at local ACE hardware, but was a tad too long and had to be cut off (easy with a hacksaw). Look around/search for the thread.

I had the same problem with my D18 prior to getting a good skid plate on it. The pan had hit a rock and the gears were rubbing on the inside of the pan.(awful noise) It would stick a little and then let loose. I dropped the t-case pan, straightened it out and it has been fine since.

I had a similar problem with my T86 a couple of years ago. Heard a pop and would hang up going forward...go forward a few feet and bind up some. Never could find any parts floating around until I tore it apart. The reverse idler had lost a couple of teeth and they were grinding themselves up along with the rest of the gears. Hope it is something simple in your case.
