I'm picking up a 74 CJ5 today, I've looked at once and its in decent shape and it has a freshly rebuilt 258. The owner says the suspension needs work and I'm not sure if its the springs, shocks or both that need replaced.

Whats the best way to determine if the springs need replaced?

    Thanks.

They probably need to be replaced. Is it sagging on the bumpstops? Look for broken leafs, worn out bushings etc...

Other than that, drive it. If its excruciatingly rough it needs springs. Most vehicles of that vintage have worn out there springs so every bump in the road goes right to the frame and your seat.

    Hope that helps,

Yeah in the big scheme of things springs are kinda cheap and they will definaltely ride better and restore a bit of height to the suspension..
