Great price for a highly modified/built flat fender. Too bad there’s no title.

The Jeep was originally built by a guy named Steve who has since passed on. Jay Lawhon bought it and during his ownership it became “Barny” and Warn used it to build the Prototype XCL (Xtreme Coil Link) Black Diamond suspension before they sold Black Diamond. Jay has also passed on. Both Steve and Jay were members of The Jolly Jeepers 4x4 club started in 1962. Richard Imholt’s (R&P Old Jeep Parts) BBC CJ-7 was also used to prototype the XCL. Richard and Gary and Ed Holbrook (Holbrook Long Leaf springs) were also members of The Jolly Jeepers. Ed has passed on also.
Barny has been purchased a couple times and resold. It is an old build but worked very well on the trail back in the day. I used to wheel with all these guys.

I talked to a local 4x4 builder last week asking if he could stuff coil springs under my DJ and he thought there would not be room on narrow axles. I saved these pics and will show him. Great looking jeep.

Thank you for that bit of history! I figured someone on here would have known something about this build

Thanks for the backstory. I'm a little mad a much better 1963 DJ-3A, of all things, shows up on the other side of the state a couple months after I bought mine. It would have been a much better starting point.

Oh well. That's the way it goes. I think I want a milder build than that anyway.

Not my choice either but it's classic build style with some innovations along the way which made it a special Jeep.
And obviously it was able to handle any of the trails it frequented.
Some of the early 50's, 60's and 70's builders, designers, and fabricators have gotten us to where we are today.

I was referring to all the people that were related to the Jeep that have died.

I'd be very tempted by this if it was closer.

Every once in a while I'll forget about the small voice in my head telling me to build a flatfender into a crawler. Then I'll see something like this, and the voice comes back.
Personally, I think flatfender crawlers on big tires are some of the coolest looking rigs out there, especially low-hoods that have some body stretch. Just gotta figure out what I like about them specifically so I can duplicate it myself...
