    Hi everyone.

I saw an add in the paper for a 76 Cj 6 6cyl 4spd for around 1500. I am considering selling my 59 cj5 and buying the CJ6 if its in decent shape.

The 59 will be very cool to drive when complete, however I currently want the jeep simply as a fun backup to my DD. I really like the 59's look and history, but, My current goals are to have something somewhat reliable, fun to drive, tough enough to take light abuse, and here's the big ones ... decent on gas and capable of moderate Highway speed. I Know those last two are sort of anti jeep goals.

but if the 76 is in decent shape , is it a better truck for my needs. I think they had disk brakes in front and certainly higher gears than the 5.38's that are in my 59.

Again I am not looking for cadiliac ride quality, or corvette handling, I just want to putter around at 65 or so.

How are the intermediate jeeps as far as on road vehicles?

Any common problems outside the normal age issues?

    Thanks

    76 isn't intermediate. That ended in '75.

Soo, you'd have a late CJ-6. Prolly the best as far as creature comforts go and disk brakes etc.

Check the frame and spring mounts.

They made 'em until '81. Just not common in the states.

I would hazzard a guess that this isn't a '76 now that I think about it.

So it would still have Saginaw steering, but 11" drums. Narrow springs like the Earlies do. Better ride just because it's a 6.

    Wow you guys are quick.

Add says its a 76 CJ6 6Cylinder. I had a feeling Cj6 was also a Scrambler or something longer than normal. The picture in the add shows a normal looking lenth. Could be a cj7 or a 5. It has a glass body. Windows are angled back slightly, wipers are mounted down low on the windshield, mirrors are mounted to the window hinge, can't tell about the door hinges, Currently nodoors installed.

I plan to look at it this week in person. maybe.

    Check it out, take pics!

Scramblers were long too... had more rear overhang than a 6. Scramblers were built from 1981 through 1985 (86 model year)
    Build code = CJ8.

Cj6 will have the "hump" in the door opening, Scrambler will havew a square opening like a CJ7.

It was my understanding the disk brakes didn’t come out until the 78 model year.

I'm pretty sure '76 was the first year for optional front disks on CJs. Lots of changes in '76, including the introduction of the CJ-7 and the deletion of the CJ-6 from the domestic market. IIRC available gear ratios in '76 were 3.54 and 4.10. My '77 manual shows CJ disks.

Wasn’t sure Tim thanks. I knew they came out with something new in 78, it wasn’t the disk brakes but the low gear T-18.
