Howdy, I'm new to the site and new to Jeep ownership.
I just bought a 1974 CJ5 with a 6cyl (unknown size) and the 3spd. Its going to be my weekend and offroad toy. The only problem with the Jeep is the steering column, its about 3 inches from my chest! How difficult is it to swap in a shorter column or a tilt column (preferably both)? What vehicles should I take it from? Thanks in advance :)

    Howdy from W. MI....

Before looking at the column, I'd look at the seats and steering wheel. These are more often swapped out than columns, and it might be something non-stock that's putting the wheel too close.

    Hullo from the UK.

I'd go with Mike's advice here, before messing with the column. However, I've swapped out my non-stock column for a tilt flaming river one from Quadratec. It was an expensive piece of kit (great quality), but wasn't too hard to do. You can see the pics from the link on my signature.

I'm not sure that I've gained much space over the previous wheel though; I'm still going to attempt the Boyink-patented 'Wheelhouse Notch' to give me some more room (I'm 6'1" and pretty broad).

If you search this forum, you'll find a link to Mike's excellent write up. It's probably cheaper too!!

Good luck with your Jeep. PM me with any specific questions...
