Any of the SBC distributors from a 283 or 327 would be as small as they get.

There are aftermarket distributors that are (slightly) smaller than the early GM ones, but they are expensive.

Are you sold on the SBC? A V6, either an older Buick or a 4.3 Chevy fits a lot better.

    well the price is right.
but like James says, "free" can be really expensive!
Having bought a '46 2A with a SBC when I was young 'n dumb and full of... let's just say it wasn't the most prudent purchase. It too came "all original" with the T-90, and that's how I learned to rebuild those little 3 speeds. After the third time I hunted down a M 21 (Muncie 4 spd), Hurst linkage and adapters to the D18. Had I been smart I would have just ditched the V8 and used a Jeep 225. So easy to work on and lots of performance without the hassles of making everything squeeze in.
Yep, HEI would be good in that you won't be trying to install points and condensers but you'll still have firewall mods to deal with.

Petronix pickup in small cap points distributor with a msd box?

You will definitely want a short water pump and accessory brackets.

When I went to tbi affordable fuel injection was able to provide a small cap distributor for something like $200.

I should clarify that I actually like the sbc305 in a jeep - relatively longer stroke, plenty of go for light jeeps, potentially with TBI etc....just that any engine swap with significant power upgrade beyond the v6, may lead to a cascade of additional changes and upgrades and expense etc.....at the same time, I think one could run a standard 305 in front of a t90 if they don't hammer the throttle too much. Driving style goes a long way towards durability. That being said, assuming the v8 needs to be positioned precisely, and the rest of the drivetrain positioning will probably get moved from OEM, then upgrading the transmission etc isn't much more work....at least that was my thoughts with the SBC/465 swap I did in the 58. As the cross member and floor pan etc was all going to need reworking even if the t90 was kept, then might as well do that around a stronger trans than do the same work for the more questionable t90.

I don't have an issue with a stock or mild 305 in a cj, a flat fender will be tight but It's doable even with the t-90. Yes a 4.3 is easier but it is not any less expensive.

But the ross steering has to leave or you will need a remote oil filter.
Get an aluminum radiator for a v6 cj5 or you need an electric fan.

A v8 does have better oil flow to the main bearings than an automotive 4.3 v6.

Maybe but in this case, a 305 should be near perfect. Great low end torque for the displacement, somewhat economical to run, and, with a little sane driving, should get along fine with the rest of the stock drivetrain. The proverbial cat's meow would be to throw on GM's TPI system that was originally specifically designed for that engine and worked extremely well. Yes, you need a small cap distributor if you want to avoid chopping the firewall, and the short water pump. But it all does fit and has been done no doubt thousands of times.

When I had the 327 in my 3B, I'm pretty certain I was using the stock oil filter with the Ross box so that can work too. That said, the Ross box most definitely SUCKS. The T90, or for that matter, the rest of that stock drivetrain, went those two years with nary a single problem.

That is also me. I spent a couple years pondering whether to go LS for the last engine in my 3B but the old school Gen I won that argument. If one is just looking for horsepower, that isn't really a contest. If bottom end torque is the primary criteria, most, if not all, that advantage goes away. That said, I do wish some of the LS induction manifolds were available for the Gen I's.

That 305 should make excellent Willys power. Go for it. After the 327 went into the B, I never looked back. The V6's work well but they will never match a well set up V8, performance or grin magnitude wise-on-road or off.

OK, I'm kinda SBC ignorant and want to know more; I have a 350 Gen1 crate in my Wagon. I don't want to hijack this thread but would like to read up on the advantages of certain SBC's as in torque, etc. so if there's a place to get this education I'd like to know. I have heard that 327's can handle high revs and that 305's and 350's can be low rpm torque monsters. Guess I really want to justify my having one ;)
