Sidepipes

When I put my Jeep on the road, it was a year too young to no longer require a safety inspection. Needless to say, the headers with mufflers turned out just in front of the rear tires was a no-no in my state. Exhaust has to exit behind the passenger compartment. I pick up more pipe, turned them in, over the axle, outboard again to go around the rear tank. Something to think about if you are required to have a vehicle safety inspection.

 

I have had both in frame and outside frame exhaust.
When I got my jeep it had fenderwell headers with mufflers under the seats and turnouts right in front of the rear tires. The noise and exhaust smell was annoying, as well as the exhaust blowing on your leg if you needed to exit the jeep with it running.
I revamped the system to exit out the rear and ran it that way for several years until the headers eventually rusted/cracked out.
The entire system was replaced by Novak in frame headers with a single muffler and single tailpipe out the passenger rear corner.
No comparison in noise, exhaust smell and heat with the new system.......
Unless I was building a budget jeep and already had fenderwell headers, there is no way I would use them again.
Heck if I were in that situation I would probably sell the fenderwell headers on market place and cut back on beer for a month so I could afford the Novak headers.

 

Same thing here, exhaust had to exit the way it came from the factory.

 

My '66 currently is currently running its 5th exhaust system since we've owned it. The current version is stock manifolds with 2" pipe merging into a single 2-1/4" that runs inside the frame rails and is tucked up high and tight. It exits out the driver rear corner. It's pretty quiet, sounds good, and allows for plenty of clearance.

 

My 67 was set up with factory manifolds and mufflers outside the frame under the doors exiting in front of rear wheels. I did not like it. Felt like it was obnoxious in parking lots where you park next to other cars. Also when driving with just a top but no doors or side windows it pulled exhaust inside. And I couldn't use factory style side steps.

I couldn't find much online in the way of a factory style replacement exhaust. I found an independent custom exhaust shop locally. They seem to specialize in muscle cars and had some vintage stuff in the shop which gave them an air of credibility. I took them the Jeep and a copy of the factory service manual drawing of the exhaust. They fabricated and installed me a system for a little under $500.

I don't have many miles on the new system yet but so far it sounds better and also looks better without the mufflers under the doors.
