    Hmmmm,

40 year old surplus truck with what may be an even older travel trailer bolted to the back. All prettied up with blotchy looking paint.

    Hmmmm.

Would you need a special license/CDL to drive this thing?

Hey, that's how our economy works - can't do anything that would hurt RV sales to the geriatric consumer. Big money to the dealerships.

Set the cruise control, then go in back to have a martini or two.

I have a Class B, but I still can't believe they let me drive fire engines. At night. In blizzards and ice storms.

The volunteer nozzle heads, farmers and 80 year people can drive this stuff, BUT the people that work on them or drive for a living have to have a CDL..........
I have a class B with airbrake and tanker endorsements.....

They can't take your license away if you ain't got one and when you go into the ditch you land on the other side.

I spent around 6 hours climbing through and evaluating a surplus one of these Oshkosh airport trucks as Engineer of my fire company. There were 4 of these in the Norfolk Naval yard. These came with a impressive joystick-controlled deluge gun mounted on top of the cab. Full foam capability and dual pane windshield too. My company was in serious contention to get a surplus rig, but while the paperwork was being processed, the Gulf War started and all the “surplus” equipment went overseas.
My small volunteer company had a small airport in our district where a year before we had a fatal plane crash/fire well off the runway with no reasonable access without offroad apparatus.

When I was youngster, I picked up a job driving a 35 ton quarry truck. It was powered by a Detroit 8V-92 series diesel just like that. The engine is bigger than the photo portrays. The fan on that quarry truck was about 5 feet across. If I recall correctly I think it took 13 gallon of oil to change it. And it usually used around 125 gallons of diesel per 10 hour shift.
The same company had some other trucks with 12v-71 Detroit engines that used 150 gallons of diesel plus per shift. My favorite truck there was a 35 ton Euclid, powered by a 650 cummins. That engine was 8 feet long from fan to flywheel. It was a real hoss too, the guy driving it would pass us sometimes coming up out of the pit.
