Has anyone heard of Waukesha installing this engine in a CJ5? What I mean is, did Waukesha experiment, have a pilot program, or have plans for, or have an actual dedicated kit?
I'm not talking about someone doing this on their own in their garage, but Waukesha actually doing the work.
Would they more likely do this work for a customer that blew up their F head, and wanted a diesel as a custom job? I'm thinking they still would need a kit that contained the necessary special parts, like the bell housing. I guess they could make a one off install, but unless they were re-powering other Jeep applications, and already had bell housings that would seem unlikely.

Are there any running around today?

    Thanks

I followed a lead to the Waukesha Engine Historical Society. They told me the work was done in June of 1964. There is a dash tag that Identifies the US Dept of Mines as the owner when the work was done, and the other Waukesha tag has Denver Co. on it which makes me think the Jeep was possibly used in Cherokee Mountain... that might not be too far of a stretch. Apparently the Gov't needed a diesel utility vehicle. I'm not sure what was available in 1963. If that's the case, this Jeep could have been one of very few, or the only one, and the reason nobody has seen any.
I sent the WEHS everything that was on the dash tags. If they can find more information I'll post it.

Interesting. Sounds like a one-off or few-off trial vehicle.

"Thanks for the photos. The nameplate photo tells us a couple of things: Serial number is: 21654 & sold date 646, June 1964. This engine was originally sold to Waukesha Sales & Service in Houston, TX and shipped May of 1962. It was built to specification G3025 which in turn calls for standard specification 180DLC-93 without modification. The order did call out “Automobile” as an instruction.

Waukesha Sales & Service was a branch office of the Waukesha Motor Co at that time. They must have sold it to Waukesha Engine & Equipment Co in Denver. These two offices could have modified or not the engine accessories which I would have no record of."

This is what WEHS determined. The Historical Society did say Waukesha put engines in just about everything, but they didn't put engines in automobiles, except one was put in a Cadillac, and one went in a Packard. I don't know what engine was put in those 2 cars, but for sure it wasn't a 180DLC. Having the instruction call out "automobile" was telling.
While the Cherokee Mountain is now obsolete, it was a big deal as far as the Federal Government, and NORAD were concerned back in the mid 60's. There seems like it's a good chance that this Jeep was used underground, where the use of a diesel fueled vehicle would have been deemed safer than gasoline, and be required. I'll post a picture of the unusual data plate.
Unfortunately this site only allows 1MB photo's which wouldn't allow any detail to be seen on the plates.
