Good news--we've passed the third gear test! I have not been able to pull an oil sample yet.

If you need to check the oil, take a look at the dip stick first.

Fingers crossed. It was the engine dying while running that has me concerned.

A dropped valve could be pretty devastating.

Seems to me, since the engine is determined to be "free," that before doing more invasive procedures it would be logical to investigate why the starter doesn't crank it.

Try the obvious and easy stuff first.

Electrical probably. All the stuff duffer said. Also note, the solenoid can stick so listen for a click at the starter or wherever it's located. Sometimes you can get away with replacing only that. Cheaper than a starter.

Okay so today I was able to take a look at some things...
    • Coolant level is fine
    • Pulled the oil dipstick and level is okay (maybe a hair low) but the color looks okay.
    • Pulled the valve cover off--there was some white gunk on the inside top of the valve cover and on the rockers (condensation?)--I cleaned that off and checked all adjusted all the intake valve clearances to spec.
    • Pulled the old spark plugs out and replaced with new plugs.
    • Buttoned her back up and she started right up.
    Video of engine running:

I still want to sample some oil from the pan, but this is seeming more electrical. It was rainy the day before the engine mishap and it's been dry these past few days.

Sounds better. Seems like it was the starter bendex?

.......Look under your Distributor cap for moisture too. May be time for a new one . Back in the day, we always installed a cap & rotor , along with the Plugs. Moisture can also get to the Plug wires if they are older.
I suspect that this tune up did'nt address your initial problem, but when you mentioned the raw , damp conditions ......:susp:

My dad taught me to wipe everything clean and dry before cranking, when the air was moist

Plug wires look fairly new but I should check the distributor cap. I do still suspect the bendex and probably should still pull the starter and test it.

The old plugs were pretty carbon fouled. Might need to clean that carb and wondering about the timing…
