Yeah, I'll definitely do lots of research and find a good group of people before I attempt the Rubicon.

I guess what I am getting at is.....
There is a great group of guys here that have allot of experience with early CJ's and the modern Rubicon trail. While a few of them are on the later years of their CJ adventures, quite a bit of our group is guys in their 30's-50's. I would recommend looking at their build threads and consulting them before making a game plan for your jeep. I guarantee you that your ideal CJ5 will evolve as you see, learn and experience more.
Once your rig is ready to Rubicon, our group will by far provide the best support for your first trip.

Thank you. I'm glad that I live in the age of the interwebs and I have so much info and good people a click away.

The list I have so far is this:
Do all of the maintenance, fix the busted floorboard/body mount
    BDS lift
    33s
    Lunchbox lockers
    Skidplates
    Sliders
    Diff guards
    Tow points
Spare parts, repair kit(s), and recovery gear (specifics TBD)

That's good to know. I'll probably go with some of those. Thanks for telling me about them.

I would add ubolt skids when you do the springs. And, for your first Rubicon, I would either go on an organized run, or with an experienced friend or group. I think you are on the right track, and nice jeep! I'm partial to the tuxes.

U bolt skids? I would've never thought they could be vulnerable.

I'm definitely going to try and find a group of experienced people, with some CJs in the group, who are OK with dragging an inexperienced kid thru the trails. I used to used to think that I'd need a built crawler on 40s to do the Rubicon, but seeing first Fred Williams do it in a stock CJ then many threads of yall doing it on mildly-built CJs has really inspired me.

Yes, there are a few ways to do them, I think @Norcal69 has a good system, you could copy that if you fabricate, or you can buy them. You really don't want to break a ubolt. And, I tell you what, it is much more satisfying to go with this group and get all this old iron through the trail as a group effort, with a good group, than to cruise through in a JK with 40's. And we don't mind inexperienced, because we have a lot to offer, and we need the next generation to continue this. (That made me sound almost as old as Kyle did). My son is only 24 and driving the trail. You have to start somewhere.

Ooohhhh, I see what you mean with the U bolts. I was thinking of the U-bolts on my overslung truck, which are wrapped around the axle like an upright U.

What you said about the JKs is something I'm realizing more and more. When I was younger, I used to think that you'd need a super expensive truck with all of the upgrades to offroad. Then I learned about rock crawling, and learned that you can make some sweet vehicles and do crazy trails with $10-$15K, a welder, and a ton of fab work. Now I'm starting to figure out just how much you can do with a mildly-built Jeep without spending 2 years on a build, and I'm really excited to getting into the offroad world.

I am not there yet, but wondering when my CJ might just claim it's too old

Just like a dog, I don't think my CJ knows it's too old to play. And that is the spirit.
