I recently purchased a crown fuel tank (part 912008) for a 1960 CJ6. Problem is the fuel outlet on the tank is missing the inverted flare to accept the flared hardline. The outlet is the appropriate thread 7/16-24 npsf, but the base is flush so the fuel line won's seal. When I asked about it the vendor I bought it from said the tank doesn't come with an inverted flare. I find that hard to believe since I did not find any similar complains associated with the tank. So I am hoping I might find someone here that has bought a steel fuel tank from crown. If they in fact do not come with an inverted flare in the fuel outlet how did they get them to seal?
    Thanks

FWIW my stock tank does have an inverted flare. If you don't want to fight it out with them you should be able to find or fab a slip in adapter.

I bought a "Crown" branded fuel tank for a CJ5 about three years ago. It had an inverted flare fitting, but I had to use copper flare gaskets to get it so it would not leak. After only a few months use it started leaking around the seams. Crown doesn't make them, but they are obviously inferior imported crap. They are supposed to have an inverted flare fitting, so "the vendor" is simply admitting the tank is not correctly made. The brand name "Crown" once meant quality parts, but most of the stuff I have seen with that brand in the last few years has been imported junk.

I ended up buying a poly tank from MTD, and have been very happy with it.

Thanks. for the replies. So unless the crown tanks has stopped including an inverted flare in the outlet within the last few years the vendor is lying.

There are a lot of inverted flare adapters, but I can't find one with the correct threads. I believe the threads on the tank are 7/16-24 npts (straight) while most of the adapters are npt (tapered) at least on the male side.

    Thanks again for your help.

Does your tank have the inverted loop of tubing inside the tank for the pickup? A brass fitting with the inverted flare could be brazed in the hole.

I recently replaced an underseat gas tank and it had an inverted flare. It's a crown/omix.

Know somebody with a lathe? A tapered insert for the existing fitting is a trivial exercise.

Get one jammed in, then solder it.

I was able to speak with who I believe is the owner of the business I purchased the tank from and he offered to replace the tank with a steel omix or mts poly tank. He also wants to send the tank I purchased back to crown for their review. I don't think I want a tank from omix. I've heard better things about the mts tank, but can't seem to find any instructions or photos one installed under the seat. I see some folks here have done the install. If any of them had photos they could post it would be much appreciated.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

It's a gas tank, under a seat, not much to post, and they all look alike.
I would get whichever one you can as soon as you can before that guy changes his mind :D

I would get the Omix-ada, just because I'm not versed in plastic gas tanks

Actually, I understand the mts tanks have the fuel pick on top of the tank so you need to drill a hole and route a line from the top to the existing line. Its strange I can't find any photos of one installed. I even called MTS, but they don't provide instruction or photos.

Yes, the MTS poly tank has a fuel pickup on top of the tank and you have to drill a hole to route a line. I don't particularly like a plastic tank either, but after buying two so called "Crown" tanks, which are either Omix-Ada or MD Juan, and having problems with both I went with the plastic tank on my CJ5. The tank I bought for my CJ2A leaked like the dickens when I first installed it. I found that the bung for the fuel outlet was not completely soldered in. The Crown CJ5 tank leaked around the seams.

There should be two outlets on the bottom of your tank. One is for the fuel line, the other is a drain for the tank. The drain has a sort of bowl in the metal, and it takes a pipe plug, and is not a flare fitting. Are you sure you are connecting to the correct outlet?
