What size is the ID of the rubber oil hoses? I want to replace my hoses with hard line and i am not sure to use 3/16 or 1/4 line.

    Thanks

Go big! Is this an oil filter hose or what? My 134 only had hard lines but the filter was relocated for the hydraulic pump.

Either way 1/4 will work but 3/16 might restrict.

I'd be worried about hard lines breaking/stress fracturing from vibration due to the oil filter housing mounting.

Shouldn't be an issue If you treat it the same as a brake line (wide curves, well supported) and the filter is mounted to the engine. My filter was on the fender with copper lines that looked like curley fries from purchase in 2005 till 2011 when I moved the filter for the turbo install.

Well, there is a reason the factory used rubber hoses.

What's the reasoning for the switch to hard lines? I've considered it before but in the end decided to stay with the factory design.

Best I can tell since 41 the design has always been a flex hose for the oil filter, but it's a hard line up to the f-134 head. I could only imagine the flex hose was a military need to accommodate something added in the field atop the generator or adjustment of the generator. Tractors will have both on the same filter. The hard lines are an absolute nightmare to attach if the filter housing rotates in the clamps. Really easy to cross thread on the old tractors especially if there is a loader frame in the way.

I should have looked at mine today to refresh my memory but if I remember right the oil filter bracket is subject to vibration even though it might be miniscule. Any vibration at all can fracture a hard line over time.

This is true to an extent, Standard brake line or better and a brake line bender will be more than adequate. Put three loops toward the filter to take up any vibration just like you would a master cylinder.

I would not take a hard line from engine to frame or engine to body, that is too much but timing cover to filter bracket on head will be fine.

There are plenty of army/navy and experimental aviation articles out there if needed. I just make refrigerators with a BS in aviation, and a focus in systems design. :D but I have my text books in the closet.

But in reality wouldn't it be better to stick with a rubber hose with a guarantee that it will work?

I don't see a reason to not use the flex lines. They last a very long time, and I don't have to worry about vibration hardening a flex line. I don't have a closet full of text books, and even if I did I would not claim to know more than the engineers that designed my Jeep.

Just a reminder - copper 'work-hardens' and becomes brittle with vibration or movement. One reason brake lines are made of steel.

And yes... the oil filter canister does vibrate. I've had at least one crack its mounting bracket.

I say to stay with flex lines. Braided SS if you want. You'll be better off with no worries on vibrations , in which Our Jeeps have a lot of.

Replaced my fuel lines on the M38A1's with 5/16 fuel line and installed the Wix fuel filters.
The Gates Barricade in supposed to not break down. Just don't get the line for fuel injection, it's supper expensive. Part number 27314. Still waiting for it to come in at the FLAPS.
Part No. 27314. But I got it running with regular fuel line.

You have to have some flex in the lines.
Go stock rubber hoses and sleep good at night.

In reading this thread, I keep getting the point of all the vibration, which I don’t understand. In fact I even went out to the jeep to check for all this vibration, y’all talk about. Nothing. Then after 45 minutes, the neighbor comes out and said he's been watching me out his window for the past 45 minutes, walking around the jeep feeling the hood, the body, the wheels, the engine, oil filter, etc. and couldn’t resist coming over to see what was up. I told him I’m trying to find this vibration stuff some yea whose on the forum were talking about but I can’t seem to find it. He then asks if I tried starting the engine? Problem resolved, I found the vibration everywhere. :D

If you put rubber hoses on make sure they are Oil proof, not all hoses are oil resistant. Gas line and oil lines are different. Diesel and gas line are different, I learned this from my diesel Generator. Two different fuel pumps.
