Ok here is what I found. The aftermarket 11" drum brake conversions use a finned or reinforced drum brake. The ring or fin precludes it's use w/ the 15X8 Renegade steel rims. So I'm going to see if I can buy some unreinforced drums and if that works I'll be selling some brand new 11" drums. I'll keep you posted.

So... my '73 did not have finned drums. I thought my '75 did, but maybe not. Which years came with finned drums, if any?

    Ok ready for this.
We took the 11" drum brake "kit" drum off my five. It is a solid drum and is thicker, and has a wider outside edge, than the ones on the 74 CJ6 and a 72 Commando. The ones on the 74 and 72 have concentric rings around them. The 11" kit would not allow a 15X8 rivited Rengade steel rim to fit nor the stock 62 15X5 rim. Now the 11" drums from the CJ6 and Commando fit over the pads of the kit and not only did the Renegade rim fit but so did the stock 15x5" 1962 rim!
Now the next question. What were they thinking w/ a rivited 15X8 rim?
Wouldn't that mean that it needs an inner tube, in the late 60's!

Drilling holes to "vent" the drums. Improves dry braking, greatly reduces or eliminates "fade" on a long downhill braking session. GREATLY improves wet braking!

Do a forum search on "Drilled Drums"
Here's one of the threads, with a pic of my project...

So, are you saying that I should now try either the 74 CJ6 or the 72 Commando 11" Drums to get my 15X8 Riveted Kelsey Hayes to fit? Would these Drums fit onto my backplate? I have a '75 CJ5.

    10 mins later.....

Actually I just looked up the Drums, here is what I found.

    From Raybestos:

    - 72 Commando 11" Drums, same part number as the ones I just tried tonight on my 15X8 Riveted Kelsey Hayes, and they will NOT clear the Rivets.

    - 74 CJ6 Drums, Drums are Finned, so I don't see how they would fit.

My questions is, how come your Drums clear the Rivets and every Drum I try will not, by about 1/4"? I just don't get it.

    See link for some background:
