Same for my '61. I imagine this went away around the same time as the snorkel cut-out and battery blank-off.

Looking back at your pictures, the old tires said Red River Arsenal Texarkana Texas. They must have been contracted to make tires for the military. The Red River Army Depot must have ordered a lot of tires for the name to printed on them.

    Cool uncovering history.

Got the 7X16 NDT square shoulder tires mounted today. Dropped them off on the way to work and picked up on the way home.
The shop owned gave me the hairy eyeball for not buying the tires and tubes there. The kid that dismounted them last Saturday had never seen anything like them before and had never encountered tubes. I asked the owner to mount these himself (I didn't feel like being an experiment).[IMG]
Happy with the instant gratification. This is one of the few projects on this rig that I had that feeling.

The light isn't great back there, but you guys get the idea.

    It was getting dark outside.
I finally felt the urge to exercise the inner windshield seal (sorry blalp!). We'll see if it want's to memorize it's new position tomorrow.

    I like it!

I see the shop foreman approves.
Dog Approved! Man, does that Jeep look good. Saving history is fun.

    Love this build!
Your doing an amazing job making it new but leaving it old.

Thank you for the encouraging words. That tells me I'm on the right track and keeping that patina was the goal.

Blalp! was over yesterday helping with some wiring. Primary and secondary are functional and she cranks over pretty strong, considering that the new valves have not broken in at all. The starter works for sure. The battery I used was pulled from a tractor and that hadn't run in over a month. I need to investigate why the lights aren't working (so that means I did something wrong) but no major fires yet. I'll need to get the ignition set up soon. There are a few niggly things done like lube the steering box and install the cover gasket and finish the body mounting. I'm not very savvy about battery sizes but I do need to get a battery that fits my tray. I'll post the dims shortly.

In my youth, with a tight rebuilt engine, we'd tow a vehicle to start it the first time.

Ha! Not with this one Pete. Not so tight so I'll start it up with the conventional way.

The batteries I use in my M38A1's are 51R Honda batteries.
    I bought the O'Reilly's AGM Sure Start batteries. 2 M38A1's 1TJ, 2 Honda CRV's, 1 Odyssey.
In a couple of years 8 of these batteries. They work well.

We did too. Often towed it about 50 yards with the engine turning and ignition off. Making sure the oil pressure came up and no strange noises. Then turn on the ignition. Nothing like the feeling you get from the success of a new build on that first start up. :bananatool:,.

Dave, would you mind taking off your battery box cover and uploading photo of how you configured your batteries? For 24 volt, I'm sure you've wired in series but in my situation, must do so in parallel. I'm wondering because of this, I might choose one 51R and the other just group 51. Thank you for your input!!

Must be in series to get 24V. Wired in parallel will still yield only 12V.

For 24V 1st battery neg terminal to ground Pos of 1st battery to neg of 2nd batt. Pos terminal of 2nd batt to starter. That's series gives 24V. Parallel gives 12V but higher current available. Hooked just like regular but 2nd battery is hooked up same. Positive to positive, neg to negative. Just 2 batteries in same spot.
I'll get a pic of my series 24V hookup. Made the hold downs to fit the 51R batteries.
