Damn, that thing hasn't changed much in 70 years.

 

Seems like the correct part but I must confirm this. I'm quite sure that the part numbers in the casting are not original, but some things must be overlooked. I appreciate the help guys.

 

I used the same Rotabroach to remove rotten parts on an a1. This is not the exact brand I bought at Fastenal but I highly recommend cutting wax as a lubricant to extend the life of those cutting tips.

A bit more assembly today. But first, some blasting cabinet maintenance. I bought this Skat Blast cabinet a few weeks back. Very nice machine but the lens has been abused over the years.

Mr. Frosty has been here. The consultation is that it came on a very nice heavy cart which I've put to other uses. Also came with a Rigid shop vac. Suffice to say it was a bit difficult to see my work.

New lens with internal and external protectors installed. Much better.

But of course, now that I can see, it was hard not to notice that the tip of my gun is shot.

It never ends....

 

Makes sense. I have used whatever spray lubricants in the past though.

 

Pedals installed.




Transmission support installed.

There were no shims between the frame and the support when I dismantled, so none going in (for now).

Strategizing what would be appropriate to tackle this weekend. I do have the loom coming tomorrow or Saturday so I can complete the brakes. I could rebuild the steering box. Install trans/transfer/bell housing. Pull the engine out on the 58 CJ5. Regardless, weather looks mild so I hope for a good push.

 

Oh, finally, test fit the hat channel. I'm happy with it but need to get things cleaned up before burning it in. It all lines up just fine.

 

That is the key to keeping a project moving, keep parts coming, looking for good painting/working weather, etc. When I have a project going, I try to do something every day, even if it's just ordering or planning. Even a 1-beer project after work adds up eventually.

 

That's the secret sauce Tim, you're spot on. Speaking of which, just ordered more parts from Brent Mullins.

 

I love that you use all the old time military suppliers, Mullins, Debella, Baxter, Bizal. I don't know if you heard but John Bizal had a very scary heart issue about 3 weeks ago. He's ok now and at home, and I think as feisty as ever. We are good friends and he comes out from Minnesota and camps with us Dodge Boys at Camp Plymouth every year. Anyway, he's a great guy, and I'm glad you're getting parts from him.

 

I don't know of Mullins and Baxter.

Bent some lines. Received the 3/16" loom USPS today so this is possible. I'll bleed tomorrow with good luck.

These old/original hard lines are great templates in which to work with. I blasted the clamps which bolt onto the front diff cover, amongst lot's of other things. More tomorrow evening. I hope to have a roller.

 

OK, so some insomnia served me well...Attempting to make use of my vertical space. I may have organized some of the small parts cabinets.

Disturbing how many ACME bolts I have kicking around. It would be good if I had 25% of those radiators (or jeeps).

Since I was up so early, I've done some painting since it was warm in the shop. We had a bit of snowy today, just enough to make it pretty.

Original shocks with rock guards. Old school Monroe units and certainly originals. Blasted.

Happy that they're still operational. Also painting some brake and clutch linkage parts. I'm glad they's in good shape.

More parts painted. Might have a few extra u-bolts destined for the shelf.

OK, brakes are all done except for bleeding. I didn't have anyone on hand to help me out, even my Vietnam vet neighbor. He loves this old stuff.

Good shot of the front end. One of the things I like about the A1 is the 1" tie rods. Still missing one of the axle tube clips which secure the brake hard line. There are none on the 58 donor out back. There are supposed to be two. You can see the inch of loom on the right which needs to be installed on the line before flaring.

This is what I'm missing. At least it's not holding me up in any way at all. Does anyone have this part....Halooooooo....!
