Engine stamped for remanufactured military MD, as I learned here.

EDIT - New replacement not re-man, so I'm told.

Was that "replacement" as in new, or do you know if it was a re-built?

RMD was designated as a factory new motor to replace a MD that was deemed irreparable, or impractical to do so in certain situations like combat (or lack of an experienced machinist on hand). Think military crate motor, ready to install minus the trim. Please someone correct me if I'm mistaken. This is only the second time I've encountered a RMD. It goes right along with my motor pool theme....

I'll try to get a pic of the serial tomorrow. It's located below the water inlet in the usual place.

In my case however, I think it will need to be rebuilt given it's noob mishandling. :banghead:

It didn't get a new engine but I fund a rebuild plate on the 55 M38A1 I used to have. 55 M38A1 engine rebuild plate resized.jpg
Overhauled at Ft, Benning Ga 1968? Still have the engine, it really needs rebuilding again.

So, at the Spicer driveshaft factory...
    I have 53 3B and 52 A1 shafts here
    [IMG]
Blasted and looking like u-joints might be original
    [IMG]
After packing with grease, they seem to be serviceable

So, I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I have no clue which rear driveshaft belongs to the A1. You guys have any ideas?
    They are quite different....

Looking at post 147, my guess is the shaft with tape is from the A1.

Thanks Shaun. You usually set me straight!

    So the original take out e-brake shoes look almost as good as the ones on the shelf after a bit of wire brushing. Comparison;
So I'll use the take outs after soaking in some solvent. Quite a bit of grease contamination.
The upper shoes. Original take out on the left with part number. Note the difference in the casting. I'm thinking the one on the right is repop.

Well thank you! There are some things in life that I do not hang onto, but when it comes to tools and parts, I'm a bit of a hoarder. The reality is that replacement parts on the market today are mostly crap. I've been in the jeep game since 1986 so yes, I've accumulated some spares. Many of them were from parting out rusted hulks over the years.

It is my impression that military vehicles have the advantages of few model changes, and often have interchangeable parts with other M-series.

Also, the guvmint stashed away many spares in quantity all over the world, in packaging that would survive a nuclear exchange.

Back during Desert Storm, a mechanic that was in the National Guard said he went to a GPS location, and they dug in the desert and opened bunkers and serviced trucks stored overseas ready for the war.

Aside from sheet metal and frames, it's always impressed me how little room it takes to store a huge volume of parts!

Rear brake time. Not my favorite task in the world. I don't use this hub puller much (thankfully) since jeep brakes seem to last forever. My shins survived.
Success. Nothing broken. The axle now turns freely. The shoes were hanging up on the drums.[IMG]
As usual, anything rubber is toast. The outer seals completely crumbled. I'm hoping the inner axle seals are still good.
Brakes are soaking in the parts washer and I'll blast the drums and backing plate tomorrow.

Hoping I can still find what I need for my 52a1 when I am ready to restore. I have to remove a lot of bubba fixes…
