I’m new to pto winches. I just picked up a Koenig king 100. The seller said it had new seals and thrust bearings. My question is how hard should it be to turn by hand? I can turn it with a bar through the u joint but it seems awfully stiff. To me. Thanks

In either drive or in neutral, I'd expect it could be turned more easily than you describe, but maybe the new bearings are still tight. Is it filled with the right oil?

The main shaft and drum rotate as a single unit when pulling, but in "neutral" when the shift fork is disengaged, the shaft should turn without the drum moving, and a brake is applied to the drum. Have you tried it both ways? Possibly the shaft through the center of the drum is in need of some PB Blaster? Then grease the end bearings.

It is a worm drive, and if I remember correctly not extremely hard to turn the input shaft by hand. I think you can remove the bearing retainer caps and pull the worm gear out without splitting the case halves if you don’t want to mess around with the gasket between them. With the worm gear out it would be easy to tell if the drum shaft is binding or if the worm gear bearings need attention. I can’t remember if there are supposed to be any thrust shims in there to set the bearings on the worm drive shaft.

RKI in Texas still makes these, if you would like any new parts.

Thanks guys. There was no gasket on the worm gear end cap. Just a thin layer of gasket sealer and it was torqued down too tight and binding on the end of the worm gear shaft. Turns pretty easy now.

Enjoy. A PTO winch is an incredible tool.

That makes sense. I cut some pretty thick paper gaskets for both end caps which probably adds up to quite a bit if you consider both caps.

Have you or anyone else in this group actually ordered parts or received a parts catalog with pricing from RKI? Having a small issue the last couple days getting them or one of their distribution centers to provide me any info.

Yes, I believe we purchased a new pinion gear for the electric winch adaptor and one other thing from them. It wasn't cheap but it seemed like a better deal than making our own gear. Midwestern Catholic family, you can do the calculus on how much money "Not cheap but not unreasonable when you think about it" would be.
