Engine Stamps/ Meaning

I was going down a rabbit hole trying to figure out if the f-134 engine in my 64' cj5 was originally painted the blue and landed on an old thread about engine stamps and compression ratios for "High altitude" engines.

Now, I'm obsessing with knowing what compression ratio my engine was, what color it should be, or maybe even where is was originally sold. Can the markings can shine any light on how this engine left the factory? I've never been able to find the history of my Jeep and this seems like it could provide revelation of info!

Can anybody help me decipher the stamps on my engine?

Top passenger side near firewall/water valve reads "807084" and "CR"

Theres a Tag Plate infront of the carb that reads "09 17 E" and a "D" on the block in front of that.

Far rear corner, top, passenger side reads " F, N, F" or "N Z F" (depending how it's oriented) by the corner bolt.

Drivers side of the block, under the side cover has a "12" in the block

Drivers side down near the oil pan has a tag plate with "8 27"

Passenger side, down near the generator/oil pan reads "SD 807895"

I'd start by referring to those as casting numbers rather than as stamps.

I think you'll find many were used in-house for tracking and quality control of production runs.

 

Copy that. “Casting Numbers” it is.

 

it's likely just the color thrown onto it after a rebuild that cleaned all the original paint off.
There should be a red primer inside the motor.

 

While researching my 60 restoration I've come across this info multiple times that when sears sold replacement/rebuilt engines that most of them came painted blue. This was true of several other engine suppliers back In the 70s as well. Large engine distributors didn't bother with factory colors. Everything was just paint one or two colors. Usually either Ford Blue or Chevy red. There's also the possibility that replacement engines ordered from a dealer during the amc era, came in amc blue but thats just a theory I've read, I haven't seen any proof.

Best I could find all factory blocks from willys/kaiser came black or OD Green. Both with a red primer under them. The blue high compression heads are debated. It seems to be something the catalog claimed but never actually happened, possibly only used on non factory installed heads(dealer replacements). If any did come blue, it would only be the head that was blue.

 

I remember the original F134 engine was black, that is before my older brother rebuilt it and it became Chevy orange.

All of the pertinent engine build data will be on the stamp pad boss on the front of the engine block. The attachments below will decode for you, including the engine compression (10th-11th Digits).

Hey Pete, Which kind of photos did you attach? Were they already in an album of yours? Did you "Upload" them directly to this post? Or are you linking them from somewhere else? The reason I ask is there are frequent times when people post images on this forum and they appear to me as little tiny thumbnails. Then, when I click on them, it says:
"ECJ5 - Error
You do not have permission to view this page or perform this action."

I feel like I'm missing out on alot of good stuff on here and have no idea why haha.

 

I did a single search request on Bing. Then drag and drop onto ECJ5, from my Mac Air desktop. Takes about ten seconds total.

I have no idea why others have problems - I'm the least cyber-savvy person in the world, and proud of it. I don't know how to use a cell phone.

 

All good. Its really weird... If i'm logged in, I can't view your photos. But If I log out, I can see them just fine. Must be something within the member system.
