I am having a really bad time rebuilding my tranny. when I
put the syncro plates in they go in ok but when I put the cover on I can only shift
to 1st and rev. 2nd and 3rd are jammed. and I can no longer get a neutral position
once I try second or 3rd. I have found the syncro plates won't come out of the slots
in the blocking rings. I am almost ready to give up but I spent money on all my
new parts. I bought everything new except the cluster gear. And honestly I am quite
disappointed with 4wd hardwares parts. I bought the syncro assy. and the small parts
kit as well and the syncro plates in the small parts kit are different then the
ones in the assy. I am wondering if this could be a result of crappy parts?oh before I forget this is a t 86 case

Do you mean the little things that hold the springs in when you say synchro plates? I've had to file them before to make them not hang up.

They are called keys on Krage's website:

    20) Key,Synchronizer (3 Needed)
    Part#: 640395 (18880.16)
    Model: CJ (2A,3A,3B,5 &6),M38,M38A1,475 Wagon & Truck
    Year: N/A

I noticed 2 of the 3 in my rebuild kit were ok, but the 3rd was a little too wide due to rough edges, or poor bending. I just used one of my old ones because they were in good shape. I might have a few extra's still I could send out for free. I was nervous about assembling that synchro assembly, but mine came out perfect first try.

Glad you found the solution Brad. I've never spoken to Rick, but used his instructions on my D18 rebuild... Rick has helped many more of us than he realizes!!
Let us know how this turns out.
Where did you get your components?? Let us know so that others doing a T90 rebuild can watch for the same issue...

:? I don't know how he came up with that. I've been putting one end of the spring inside the little key to hold it in place and the other end is just kind of in between the spaces where it can't get in the way. I'm no expert but if the T86 synchro is like the T90 one I certainly don't agree with that solution. I know the key will stick like we discussed if it's too big.

I got my parts out of 4wd hardware and I dont recommend you do the same. The quality is poor and the specs are different. I wish I had known before, but then again maybe others have had no complaints. this is the second t 90 rebuild I have done the 1st I had no problems what so ever.
